day 17

Hi. I am on day 17. 10 mg for one week, 20mg thereafter.  I have been suffering anxiety following an illness for about 2 months now.  doctor prescribed citalopram. My anxiety had been worse, wakening up every hour with burning in arms and feet. Also constipated badly.  Can I expect these side effects to go away or do so need to considering changing my medicine.

Didnthe burning of skin come with prickly tingly feeling to? Was it after you started Citalopram?

No. My timeline is a bit hazy on this but I reckon it came after I started the asthma meds.  The main reason I started Citalopram was because of the sleepless nights due to the burning. I have just completed a week on 10mg so I am contemplating reducing again over the next week to 5mg. Doc said after a week I could take either 10 every other day or 5 every day.

The answer to the first question is yes.  Pins and needles symptoms and burning. I wake up with skin burning. Awful thing. Haven’t had more than 2 hours sleep on trot since I started asthma meds.

Just an update. I started  citalapram four weeks ago on Tuesday.  I was a week on 10mg and then 9 days on 20mg. For various reasons I am coming of this drug. Have just completed a week on 10mg and this is now my second day on 5mg.  Yesterday wasn’t a great day at all but I survived. I am supposed to do 5mg for a week before I go to 5mg every other day for a week. Will let you know how I go.

One of the things I’ve noticed this morning and yesterday morning is a stiffness in my jaw/mouth. Not sure if this is a withdrawal symptom or not? I’ve also have been taking sleeping tablets for 5 nights, 3.5 mg zopiclone. Yesterday doc switched me into another sleeping tablet zolpidem.

I’m pretty sure it’s a withdrawal symptom. I had stiff jaw clenched teeth even being on it .

Good luck with that Pat, that sounds really quick.  I hope you recover quickly.

    Hi All,

I need some advice please.  As you know I started on Citalapram but did not get on well with it and the doc advised me to come off it.

First week I started citalapram at 10mg.

Then I was on 20mg for the next 9 days before the Doctor told me to start coming off it.  He told me to taper as follows:

So I reduced to 10mg for 1 week and then 1 week on 5mg.

By and large I have been ok, in fact yesterday was the most normal I felt in a number of months.

As I said before I am having serious sleep issues, only getting about 2/3 hours a night.

The last couple of mornings I have had something funny going on with my mouth.  My wife noticed it as well, she said it was like I had false teeth in.  It seems to go away during the day.  Could this be a withdrawal symptom.

I posted before that my doc has now recommended I go onto a new antidepressant but I am reluctant to do that.  My main problem at this point is getting some decent sleep as I continue to struggle to switch off and keep wakening up with burning in arms and legs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That’s what I would like to do Lois. I have a weeks course of  zolpidem 10mg the doctor prescribed to go along with antidepressant. I think I’ll take it for a week and see how it works out.

The doctor prescribed sertraline.  I really don’t want to go down that route again unless it is my only option to sort out the sleeping.  I had a lot of anxiety built up over the last few months worrying about health but that has largely passed and I don’t feel I need to commit to some long term course of antidepressants when firstly I’m not depressed and secondly most of my health issues are clearing up and easing the anxiety. I just want to sleep and feel ready for the day ahead.

Why don't you try melatonin first over the counter you can take those long term..if it's nothing but a sleep issue there's no need for antidepressants..

      Hi Pat,

Magnesium is fantastic for sleep and anxiety, citalopram knocks me out, as shouldn't be on it, (but stuck on it for the time being)so have had to reduce my magnesium as it makes me even more drowsy, and only take it for the other health benefits now.

Hi All. Just to give you an update on my progress.  I started cit on 10mg for one week and then 20mg for a further 9 days before doc decided I needed to come off them.  I tapered down following his instructions. 10mg for 1 week and 5 for a second week.  Now completely off it for 3 days.  So far so good.  I noticed my upper lip is quite still from time to time and I have been getting some headache.  Felt fine last two days but a bit shaky today.  My sleep has improved somewhat.  Overall  in a better place at the moment than I have been for a number of months. Fingers crossed I get an easy ride with withdrawal symptoms and that I continue to feel better.  My anxiety source was a health issue which is resolving itself slowly but I am more positive anout it.

That's good to hear pat, I hope your withdrawal stays a positive one x

Hi Pat, as you have not been on them for long, you could be lucky with settling quickly once off them.  Headaches and feeling shaky is normal as it affects your nervous system.

      Hi Pat!

?You maybe already know this, but the inhaler medication you are on can also cause insomnia. It makes me wonder if the burning sensations/sleep problems are all stemming from that. I'm not sure if there are any other options you could talk to your doctor about taking instead, for the asthma?
