Day 4 of cipro for very mild uti but no change in symptoms
Posted , 3 users are following.
I have had 3 uti in my life, maybe once every couple years. I woke up with the weird urge to pee and then immediately felt like I needed to go again and nothing came out. Felt like the beginning of a UTI so I went into the urgent care clinic. They didn't do a culture but just a urinalysis andnoted I had a very slight amount of blood showing up. She gave me macrobid and I felt horrible the next day, flu like and achy, and she thought it might be a reaction so she switched me to cipro twice a day for 7 days. She retested my urine and said it actually looked clear of infection so the small amount of macrobid may have done the job, but said to go ahead with the cipro since it always worked on past ones. That's what I have used every time in the past and it usually clears within the first 48 hours. This time my symptoms are still exactly the same as they were on day 1. But because there was no culture...we don't know if it just not the right antibiotic or if it is something else entirely.
It it began after sex...my husband of 17 yrs, so no STDs. However, he did end up with a cold sore the next day as well, so it made me wonder if the two are related.
Anyway, I'm going to call the dr back tomorrow and see what we do from here...but curious if I should be asking for something specific to get to the bottom of this.
My my only symptoms this whole time have been the burning urge to pee, but even when I feel that urge not much comes out unless I have truly drank a ton of water to flush it out...and even then the urge comes right back within 10-15 minutes of going. Not any worse, but not any better either

Hi Lindsey,
Sorry to hear of you problem.
I have had a lot of urine infections recently but i was self catherterising due to spinal injury. Like you cipro has been the most effective one. However my last 3 have all been immune to cipro, you really need to get it sent off for a proper check they normally come back in 48 hrs with a result. I have needed Nitrofuratonin for the last 2 and gentamicin IV for the 3rd one but I did have swelling of the testicles with that one so was in hospital for 4 days.
Regarding the possible STD, it could be related but this you need to discuss with your GP a little more, I don't want to speculate on that.
I have just had a supra pubic catherter inserted ( I'm 38 ), due to many years of problems, and I am having issues, I had posted on here too hoping for some advice and guidance but so far no answers so I will try to see me specialist tomorrow.
If you can't get an appointment with your GP tomorrow, go to the surgery and ask for a pot, they have to give you a form you fill out and the Dr / Nurse will send it off.
Sorry I can't be more help.
Hope they get to the bottom of it for you.
All the best.

Hi Lindsay,
I think you need it cultured even if they think it's gone, my last one as most showed blood but the nurse wasn't going to send it off, I said due to the fact I keep getting these infections I would be greatful for it to be tested properly, she agreed and I needed the nitro. I think when you have UTI so often the results of a quick dip can be so misleading. You have nothing to loose if it comes back clear. I would also mention the cold sore I think it's not related but I think it's worth mentioning for piece of mind.
Good luck and keep me posted.
Regards
George 😀😀

I agree...I plan to mention it. I agree...we have been married 17 years and he's had cold sores before as have I...and it's never been an issue DOWN THERE for either of us...but I think it's worth mentioning since it was the same time frame. Thanks for your advice. I WILL be back to update because one thing I hate about this stuff is so rarely do we see the RECOVERY. We hear the complaints and worries and fears and then they never come back to let us know what the final result was. I am determined to not let that be me! People need to see that this doesn't last forever as some of these forums seem like because of no final post

i HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, CI IPRO DIDN'T WORK FOR ME, HE PUT ME ON STRONGER MEDS FOR ABOUT 10 TO 14 DAYS AND TOLD ME TO MAKE SURE I FINISH THE MEDS, AND DRINK 3 OR 4 8 OZ GLASSES OF WATER A DAY. IT WORKED I HAVEN'T HAD A UTI IN ABOUT 7 OR 8 MONTHS. I HAD UTIS FOR MANY YEARS HAD CULTURES SONA GRAMS IT ALL CAME BACK NORMAL. JUST MAKE SURE YOU FINISH THE MEDS DONT STOP BECAUSE YOU FEEL BETTER. HANG IN THERE

Cipro has always worked...but wondering if it is no longer effective. Going to ask about all of that. I feel pretty tired of feeling so sensitive and needing to go all the time. I never wake at night to pee, and I'm waking sometimes twice a night. Granted, I've increased my water intake, but I still have never had to wake up to pee in the night before.
I am hoping there is a better antibiotic that will kick this thing!

So should I ask for another round of antibiotics? Tomorrow will be my last day and I feel no different than when I started. It's mild...just the burning urge to urinate, but I want to be on the meds until the symptoms are all gone. I'd love to wake tomorrow and feel better, but if not, I'm afraid I won't have had meds long enough

Hi Lindsey
Sorry for the delay I have just woken up.
I would ask for more meds just enough until the results come back, my guess will be a change in meds and a 14 day dose is what's needed.

George

Lindsey, you may want to try D-Mannose. You can get it at a health food store. What it does is that it coats the bladder wall, and so the e-coli bacteria can't cling onto the wall of the bladder. The lady, that told me about this takes a teaspoon or half a teaspoon every two to three hours for the first three to five days, then a maintenance dose of teaspoon everyday there after. At least this way, you are not having to take excessive amounts of antibiotics. One dose of antibiotics will wipe out the good as well as the bad bacteria in your digestive system. 25 trillion bacteria lives in your digestive system. It takes time for it to repopulate once you wipe it out with antibiotics. I am not a doctor, but just something I saw on You Tube.
