Day 4 post-op, my experience this far.

I underwent the rubber band ligation procedure for two internal hemorrhoids 4 days ago. one medium sized and one small hemorrhoids were banded. the surgeon let me know that they were successfully banded. the first evening after my procedure was unexpected. I felt extreme pressure in my anus. I also felt extreme pressure around my prostate. in addition to the pressure and pain from the anus the pressure and pain in my prostate prevented me from urinating properly. I felt like I had to urinate every 5 to 10 minutes and urgently. thankfully that subsided overnight.

since the procedure, I've had frequent bouts of chills and hot flashes (like instant hot/sweating) - no fever. I consumed extra strength Tylenol for the first two days and that didn't help with the chills and sweating. today is day 4 and I am still experiencing the chills and sweating, but only about 25% of what I was feeling a few days ago. i spoke with the surgeon who advised that this might be normal for the first week... his explanation went along the lines that there are foreign bodies in my body (the bands) and my body is not happy with that. along with the chills and sweating, I also am experiencing frequent bouts of nausea. again this always comes in waves and I can be fine for and hour or more and all of a sudden I feel ill like that again. the chills or sweats often last maybe 5 to 10 minutes. I think it also be important to note that throughout this process I have had zero pain while having a BM since the procedure. I think I can attribute that to the fiber I've been consuming to help soften my stools. mind you, I haven't really been eating full size meals yet because I'm still feeling nauseous. so my BMs haven't been as big as they normally would have been pre procedure.

I have been using a water-soluble fiber. I found a FODMAP and IBS friendly water soluble fiber that helps tremendously in ensuring my stools remain soft. its called SunFiber (sold as AOR SoluFiber in Canada). just a warning: when i first started taking this fiber a few months ago, the first 4 days were very gassy! but that quickly subsided. I would recommend starting with a low dose and increase over the week.

I've read quite a few posts on this forum about patients who have not received full details about what is expected post procedure. I too had a similar .experience. I was unaware of the complications or recovery time for this procedure. I too had to call the surgeon and speak to him to get more information about my condition. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one experiencing what I'm experiencing.

I've noticed nobody really mentioned Venixxa. it is supposed to manage pain and swelling for acute hemorrhoid flare-ups. I was very skeptical of this medication that my doctor suggested I try. it took quite a few days for the medication to work, but man was it amazing! what a difference it made after 4 days of consuming Venixxa. about a week later my flare up was much much better. although a few times straining didn't help. after 60 days, my doctor suggested I stopped taking it for a while (per mfg directions). as soon as I stopped I had another acute hemorrhoid flare-up only 3-weeks later. I took Venixxa again, and again after about 4 days, my anus was in a good place again. I had read on other forms that taking Vanessa post procedure is also very beneficial in keeping swelling down and improving recovery time by a day or two. needless to say, I've been consuming Venixxa since before my procedure - I have to wonder if this has contributed to the quick reduction in swelling and maybe even possibly the lack of pain during a BM so soon. just a thought. I guess who really knows? we all heal differently!

all in all, I'm happy that I'm not feeling much physical pain, but the unexpected "reactions" that may be part of the healing process for me has been quite frustrating, especially with the chills, hot flashes and waves of nausea. this has prevented me from going back to work sooner than I thought I could. it's just very difficult to stare at a screen and/or concentrate when you're nauseous.

best wishes to everyone.
