Day 5 post anterior THR

Hello all

Well it’s day 5 and I’ve just come home from hospital. The op itself went well except for the spinal. They couldn’t find a gap and I fainted so they went to a full general anaesthetic. That lead to a night of vomiting after the op.

Anyway my question is did anyone find themselves crying for absolutely no reason? Since I’ve settled at home the waterworks won’t stop!

Oh yes! I think I cried every morning for two weeks! It's quite normal, especially after general anesthesia. With my second hip replacement I had a spinal and did not cry anywhere near as much.

Oh god yes. I was so emotional. It’s major op your body goes into shock. It was several weeks it lasted with me.  I felt useless .  Don’t worry love   You’ll soon be feeling normal.

    That's not uncommon,even amongst `strong` men - i had my emotional `moments`

It can be an emotional as well as physical roller coaster ride to recovery.

I had to have GAas my blood clotting was low,and the recovery was really rough for about 6 hours.

    Hi Beth,

I felt a bit depressed the week after the op, I realised how down I was after sending an email to a friend and their reply back. I though I had better pick myself up before I got too bad. I also lost confidence for a short while. So, don't worry it will not last. Good luck with your recovery.

Not unusual for the crying after going home following surgery. I was very emotional for more than a week after surgery. Your body goes through a lot during surgery. Pain pills can affect your emotions, too. I stayed ahead of the pain but did take less than what I could have and I think that helped a bit. Within a couple of weeks, I wasn't weepy anymore. (I was off the strong pills by then and took Tylenol only.)

Wishing you the best during your recovery. It takes time and everyone is different.

Posting here is helpful as other people have gone through many of the same feelings during their recovery. We understand.

I had a spinal and I vomited like mad afterwards and totally lost my appetite for a week afterwards. I think in my case it may have been the morphine.

Same with me. I have scolliosis so they couldn't find an appropriate spot. They tried 5 times which left me with 5 holes and accompanying bruises. After GA op I was very sick and no appetite for a week. Things I loved (like coffee) smelled and tasted weird.

Crying??? Hell ya!! Even had a few mild temper tantrums out of frustration and my lost independance.

Im 3 1/2 months on and all is back to normal but WITHOUT HIP PAIN!!

    Glorious 😊

You'll be feeling better soon. Hang in there!
