Day one tomorrow

I'm having to go off my 100mg pills taken 3x a day for the past 2 months. Pharmacy has left messages with doctor for refill... Doctor does not call back. After reading so many distrubing things about gabapentin, I am worried about going off of it cold turkey. Any advise. I was taking it for sciatica but it only sorta worked. Thank you for your comments.

I slowly decreased mine because it stopped working. When I got to 100 mg three times a day, the doctor told me to decrease by 100 a day for a week, then another 100 less for the second week and then after a week of one pill a day...stop. I was fine. Either way ou need to call your doctor either for a refill or for advice. Your physicians need to know you want to stop.

Thanks Sandra. The Doctor that prescribed the Gabapentin was not a regular doctor of mine. Might be why she's not refilling it. I've talked it over with my hubby. I also was mistaken on my dose. I wasn't home when I joined the group. I'm taking 300mg 3x a day. It didn't seem to work that well for me. I'm praying that will mean it won't be rough going off it.

You probably will have to call your family doctor for more so you have enough to decrease slowly. Don't let them talk you into cold turkey. I was at that dose and when I started to decrease I did 300 in the am, 200 midday and 300 at night for a week. Hen I did 200 three times a day for a week. Then I did 200, 100 and 200 for a week. Then 100, 100 and 200 for a week. Then 100 three times a day and then as I previously wrote till I was off. I actually feel more alive in my head since I am off it. But I did it slow and nothing bothered me. Strangely I am sleeping better without it and it is suppose to make you sleep. Another nature wonder!

Absolutely do NOT go off cold turkey - the withdrawal will be horrible!  It really is best to withdraw under a doctor's supervision but if you want to go off on your own here is the taper schedule my ER doctor just gave to me on Wednesday - I went to the ER with chest pains and had been taking Gabapentin to withdraw from ativan/valium for insomnia which I had been on for 3 years -see my post under Gabapentin withdrawal:  for 1 week take 200 mg a day, followed by 1 week of 100 mg a day, followed by 1 week of 100 mg every other day, followed by 1 week of 100 mg every third day and then you will be off it with no withdrawal symptoms.

I wish you the best and good for you for deciding not to take it any more - the side effects (as far as I am concerned) are not worth whatever benefit you were deriving and from your post - not much.  There are other non pharmacologic treatments for sciatica - including physical therapy and also look it up on Youtube.  There are stretching exercises you can do. MDs rely far too much on drugs!!!!

I actually have no choice but to go off cold turkey.  The doctor that put me on this drug did not respond to my pharmacy's phone calls at all.  I ran out yesterday, never did have a refill.  I was on it for 47 days it turns out.  I have a chiroprator's appontment this morning in an hour or so and I will ask them to help me out.  I can't imagine they would want me in dire circumstances. I've been going to physical therapy for over three months now, and the sciatica did not lessen, even with the gabapentin. I had no relief from either. I started going to this chiropractor a week ago, and my sciatica has calmed way down.  I'm going to stick with this.  And see if I can get another prescription for gabapentin from these people to wean me off of it.

      Thank you for your concern.

My family doctor who is not in network with my husbands insurance plan was sure I had sciatica and told me if I wanted an expert in network then get an opinion right away.  So I went to a bone specialist who told me the only thing wrong with me was I had arthritis in my knee.  I wanted a second opinion so staying in network I went to a second bone doctor who said yes it's sciatica and she wanted me to see this in network doctor who specializes in backs, to make sure nothing else was going on. So she gave me the Gabapentin.  I went to my second opinion back doctor who told me and showed me my L5 Vertebrae was dislodged. She told me to keep taking the Gabapentin and wanted to know if I wanted to up my dosage. I said no.  She gave me a second drug called Flexirl which I had never heard of. So I was taking 2 different nerve related nerve killers.  Which only sorta worked by the way. Never did take the pain away.  But I was so tired I couldn't even make enough coffee to keep me awake. I spent 47 days sleeping it seemed. I was going to physical therapy all this time and never really got better either.  I was done with my allotment of physical therapy, still in pain from my sciatica.  I work at a common drug store part time and one of the pharmacists told me my best bet was to see a chiroprator.  So that is where I am now. After my third appointment with them my sciatica went away.  I was so tired I didn't even notice the pain was gone till someone asked me how bad was I still in pain.  My family doctor who is out of network has no idea what I have been through. I see her next week for my yearly physical. I'm planning on writing up an essay of my health travels. Once my physcial is over I'm headed over to start going to an in network doctor that my husband goes to.  My pharmacist told me I should try leaving a message for my family doctor explaining what is going on if I really want to, and ask for enough pills of Gabapentin to wean myself off. She may or may not okay it.  She was not the doctor that prescribed them in the first place.  I talked to my chiropractor yesterday and she told me she knows nothing about Gabapentin and doesn't use drugs with her patients. i've talked to a couple of people who have been on this drug for a shorter time like I have and have expressed no problems coming off of it.  I'm starting to get confused.

Chiropractors cannot prescribe by realm of their license and eventually your manipulation will max out too if covered under your plan. You need to explain to your out of network doctor what is going on rather than risk the side effects if fast withdrawal. I think your pharmacist gave you the best advice. I had sciatica and my knee was causing it. I saw a spine specialist who with PT solved it. I had injections in my piriformis and continued to do daily exercises to stretch it. You need a professional to step in and advise you.

You're welcome Rox731.  The chriropractor sounds like a good idea as a cource of more of the durg in order to taper; if he can't I highly urge you to try someoen else - cold turkey would definitely be a horrible idea!

I want to thank everyone who has replied to my post and helped me.  It has been 7 days since I was forced to go off Gabapentin, cold turkey.  I have not had one issue of withdrawl.  The medicine didn't really work that great for me in the 47 days I was on it, and was told my someone at church she had the same results. As her, I also had no withdrawl.  I want to say a big thank you for all who have shared your withdrawal symptoms.  Knowing what I know about this drug I will refuse to use it in the future. You were all a really big help.
