Dazed and Confused !

Following an endoscopy got diagnosed with Barretts oesophagus and oesophagitis yesterday! I am a nurse so of course I always think of the worst. Thank goodness I have found this forum- people in the same boat. They also found on pelvic CT that I have a 4x5cm 'lump' between my ovary and uterus but they are hoping that this is a cyst or fibroid!! Thought I was going to be diagnosed with Hiatus Hernia or Coeliac- Am in shock!

Hi and I know how you feel... Sometimes more information does not help. My second endoscopy today revealed my ulcer had healed and the endoscopist said he thought the barretts was such a small area that he was surprised I wanted another check in 3 years!!! I just have the barretts and a hernia so I am sorry that you have something else. It is weird to say I hope it is a fibroid or cyst but whatever it is they will be onto it quick so that is reassuring. There are a lot of folk who have what we have and do not know as they Have no symptoms. I agree this blog is quite a comfort. Good luck

    Hi Jennie,

Those of us who have Barrett's and know it are the lucky ones. We'll get regular surveillance screening every few years and in the unlikely event that pre-cancerous dysplastic changes are seen, we can have it ablated.

There are probably one million people in the UK with Barrett's but only 10% know it. It's those who haven't been identified who are at greater risk of developing the cancer and they may learn too late.

My particular 3cm of non-dysplastic Barrett's has remained unchanged for at least 21 years and will probably be the same when I die of something completely unrelated.
