DD Flare up

Hi, I am new to this forum. So happy I found this. I had my first DD attack in October of 2017. Was hospitalized for 4 days with IV and pain meds. I was given Cipro and Flagyl by IV and then sent home for 10 more days orally. I had my colonoscopy in December of 2017 in which they confirmed that I had moderate diverticulitis and I also have ulcers in my esophagus and in my stomach. I have pretty ok ever since except for the heart burn which is my biggest burden every day of my life. The reason why I have changed my diet completely and am working out. However, 2 weeks ago I had a stomach flu that lasted about 3 days and then had a DD flare-up immediately after. I called my GI doctor and he called in the Cipro and Flagyl on day 2. The minute I took the medication I started itching and had hives all over my body. Spent that entire night with the itching and the DD pain. Woke up in the morning all swollen with hives and called my GI doctor and he told me to stop the medication immediately and he put me on Augmentin. I stopped eating....only fluids and am now still on soft foods. Does anyone know if a DD flare up can be cause from a viral stomach flu? Just curious since I have been doing everything right and don't understand why this would happen again. Thank you.

I don’t know about the stomach bug causing it but maybe it really wasn’t the stomach bug after all. I was also diagnosed last year and also have horrible heartburn and colonoscopy showed ulcers as well. This disease is so frustrating as it seems like you can do everything right and bam your back in the same boat. I had three hours back to back last year and then one more in May. My GI Doctor was adamant that I needed surgery. I dug my feet in and said no and have been trying everything to keep from having another bout , so far I have managed. I found a great probiotic that allows me to go to the bathroom every day and I honestly think that has made a huge difference with the exception of the heart burn. The only time I don’t have heartburn is when I’m on Prilosec every day😡

Same thing happened to me! I had gastroenteritis (flu) in Dec 2017, then
2 flares of diverticulitis in Jan and Feb!
It sounds like they could be related!

Now that I think back on it, I actually thought I had the flu in early January -- achy back of my neck, overall achy feeling, the typical symptoms of influenza. It wasn't until I went to the doctor and got a round of antibiotics and was still running a temp at the end of the round of antibiotics that I was sent to get a CT scan for lower left abdominal discomfort that I was diagnosed with DD. So now I don't know. Maybe there is a relationship.

Not sure if there is any relation but I was hit with the flu hard in tbe beginning of Feb..out of work a week, returned one day and that evening had a flareup. I knew right away what it was by the pain, went to doctor's and began 10 days of flagyl/cipro..had to do 2 rnds of meds to shake it this time as a ct scan showed a small are of infection still present after rnd 1.
Day 8 of my second 10 day rnd of meds my right side achilles tendon swollen and sore, apparently tendon tears a rare but possible side effect of cipro and other like antibiotics. Over 3 weeks now and still have swollen/sore achilles tendon..seeing a podiatrist about this.

Have you read some of the online reviews of Cipro? They were concerning to me. I went with another antibiotic. I'm sure everyone reacts differently.

I had some serious concerns about the reviews of Cipro that I read online. Therefore, my antibiotics were Amox-Clav 875 and Metronidazole 500 (rather than Cipro) during my siege with DD. It took me a full 90 days to feel anywhere near normal. I'm presently symptom-free, but who knows what the future will bring. I'm definitely careful to eat right, no alcohol, and lots of water. So far, so good.
