Dealing with a fistula.

Hi, hoping to connect with people about issues with fistula please?  Had an abscess some months ago which required emergency surgery, and then developed a fistula.  Really struggling to understand how these things develop - is it poor self-care?  poor nursing? poor surgery, or unavoidable? Now I have a seton, and am struggling to understand how this works.  How do I look after myself to make sure this goes away?  Anyone out there got some wise words?
