I think you are on the right path.  Everyone is different.  Fusion surgery is a bit tough right after but I am glad that I did it.  I had to or I could have been paralized if the nerve was severed.  It takes time but the sooner, I hope decompressing the nerves will leave you with out permenent nerve damage.  The better shape you are in physially helps and a lot of walking after.  I have had a lot of different surgeries and was not in the best shape.  It took me longer than others probably.  I have read and my nerosurgeon said that it could take up to one or two years to completely resolve.  Be patient and walk. It is almost one year and I still am having pain in butt, but tightness in hip has esolved finally.  I have a hurniated disk in my neck which really hurts now so I think that the L5 S1 is getting better.  As a nurse you understand when one thing hurts more than another your brain is consentrating on the most painful situation. Best of luck, and I believe in pain management.  Also nerve damage is a different animal altogether.  Meds for nerve pain in addition to pain medications may help.  Lyrica or Neurotin and pain meds.  I hope that this helps.  I have had a lot of surgeries and I can't lie this is major but I would rather have back surgery than abdominal surgery.  Everything takes time though.  CristeeLinn
