Deltoid ligament pain after ORIF

Posted , 7 users are following.

hey guys, Im wondering if any of you have experienced pain in your deltoid ligaments after orif surgery? I dislocated my ankle badly and shattered the fibula 8 weeks ago and have been feeling this stabbing pain in my inner ankle since. If you recognize this problem, when did the pain stop and how? I am FWB now but it has had no affect.

I have this too. I just discovered yesterday in PT that it is coming from lack of range of motion from my plate on fibula side. I am now practicing going down steps and increasing the motion & pressure. It's difficult to step down with my good side as the broken side doesn't flex as I step off, but I think that is where my issue is coming from. I can say this morning I don't feel it that inside pain...yet. Keep doing your range of motion exercises- hope it helps you!

Yep, I also had similar pain when I started weight bearing. I think that particular pain lasted till about 15 weeks. It didn't just stop one day though, came and went as I did more and increased balancing and impact (hopping, jumping) on it.

Ligaments take around 3mths to heal, compared to the 6 weeks for bones so continued pain and weakness is to be expected. My physio taped my ankle twice a week for a really long time once I was completely out of the boot. That definitely helped.

My injury was fibula fracture and level 3 (complete) tears to ligaments on both sides of ankle with ORIF and 7 screws. I'm now at 10mths post injury and returned to all activities. I want to say I was pain free for all of November through January.. I was cleared to return to ice hockey at the end of January and so I have had a return of pain as I increase the level of impact and stress through the joint, especially where the plate is. The pain is getting less again as the muscles get back into the swing of things though.

Strengthening exercises for getting your foot into the correct position. See if it is rolling inwards due to the weaker ligaments. It's called the short foot position. If you don't have a physio, you can youtube what this looks like. When your foot is in the short foot position your ankle while be in the correct alignment. I am still constantly working on that.

I think it's still very early in for you. I am almost a year out, still having stabbing pains inner ankle, mine is due to the posterior malleolus fracture that has still not healed.
