Dental Abscess below a filled root canal tooth major pain help!

I have been suffering severe pain on the right hand side of my face/ jaw on and off since the end of December. At worst it’s totally debilitating can’t eat or sleep and can’t focus on anything. I have been to the dentist 3 times so far in mid January he prescribed amoxycilin which did very little. I was then waiting for an emergency appointment for 2 weeks when I finally got in for an ex-ray they weren’t able to read it for another week and a half as the x-ray machine had broke. I finally got in for another appointment last wednesday to get the results of my x-ray and start treatment. As I had expected and been telling my dentist I have an abscess below a root canal tooth, this tooth had always felt weird and sensitive and have been telling my dentist this for years. He told me he doesn’t think all the pain I have been experiencing is from this abscess as the nerve should be dead yet I feel it emanates from here although when its severe the whole side of my jaw is intensely throbbing top and bottom. Basically he has started to remove deep filled fillings on my back right molars and put in a new treatment that builds a layer of false tooth between the nerve and filling of a deeply filled tooth. He said he would ask me in a month if I would like to have the abscessed root canal re done or pulled. In the mean time I am still in acute pain that is stopping me sleeping at times. This can be better for a day or so and then come on more severe and debilitating again. I feel really drained and generally quite unwell as its been almost two months of suffering with this. I wanted to ask two questions. Has any one got advice on whether I should pull or try and save the root canal tooth? Has anyone experienced the same thing? I have read some scary stuff about abscess potentially causing auto immune diseases (I already have ulcerative colitis which Is an AI disease) Also should I go see a second dentist as mine seems to be very slow and even after diagnosis he wants me to wait a month after already suffering for two months! I have managed to keep it at bay some of the time with garlic capsules, salt water and tea tree mouth washes, clove oil and lots of strong pain killers. I am now in the more intense agonising pain and even pain killers don’t help, I believe it is the abscess causing this agony I just feel really let down by my dentist and Im not sure what to do next... need some relief please help!

Got my root canal done last week Monday and by Wed I was in severe discomfort and pain.  From reading comments here I suspect my condition is no different than everyone else here, and for sure I have a case of abscess below the fill.

Visited the dentist Saturday and he said just do salt water gargle few times a day, use colgate senstive teeth toothpaste and drink lots of water. Doing all that and there is absolutely no change in my condition.

I dont want to go back to my dentist. My question is can i simply start taking anti biotics and the problem will go away after few days?

Any suggestions / adivse to reduce the pain?

I am right there with all of you.

When I was a teenager I was told by a dentist that I had genetically weak teeth. I don't know how true that is, but I do know that I've had a whole host of problems.

I got 4 root canals done around the time I was 18 years old (10 years ago).

Then about 1 1/2 yrs ago I had the most terrible abscess on one of my root canaled teeth. My dentist told me I needed to get another root canal done to it, but I felt like this was a totally illogical choice.

My dad referred me to his neighbor who is an implant surgeon. This guy saw me, prescribed me some heavy duty antibiotics, and strongly suggested I get an implant. Granted he had money to make if I did so, but I knew how useless a second root canal would be, and I was in such agony, I went with the implant option.

My implant experience was pretty great, to be honest. This guy is one of the best in my city, and he was able to pull the tooth and install the implant in one surgical procedure. 3 months later I was able to get my fake tooth (which looks 100% convincing).

Since then all the rest of my root canaled teeth have gone bad. Then another of my teeth had such terrible decay taht they said they couldn't save it unless I did a root canal. I opted to get it pulled in order to get an implant eventually.

I have no idea what the real deal is with teeth. I feel like dentists and specialists give so much conflicting advice and information that I no longer really trust them. I don't know that implants were the way to go, but I'm continuing to do them. The fact that they can never decay or get infected again is what sells me. And why would I pay for a root canal that will eventually go bad, and then have to pay for another procedure after that (ie another root canal or implant etc)?

The only downside I've been able to find about implants is that sometimes the gum has a hard time adhering to the titanium bolt and then begins receding. At this point you would need to pay for more bone grafting (they do bone grafting during the initial implant procudere).

I'm struggling with another infected root canal right now, and it stresses me out so badly. I hope and pray there is major reform in the dental industry and dental insurance industry soon. Teeth shouldn't be considered unnessary. Obviously they can cause serious damage to the body, so they definitely are necessary.

***One last tip. I have been able to greatly reduce the infection by taking the following supplements religiously, for at least a week at a time: Silver Hydrosol, Olive Leaf, Oil of Oregano, and Grapfruit Seed Extract.

Also clove oil administered to the tooth and gums directly help the pain tremendously!

Does your jaw hurt in the mornings?

Sounds like all the same problems I had (horrible teeth all my life, multiple failed root canals) turns out I just grind my teeth in my sleep. My most recent dentist figured it out last year. Could've saved thousands of dollars years ago with a $20 night guard. Just a thought.

Hey how are you. I hope you got it extracted I do relate the same thing happened to me. I got my extraction today 06/02/15. I feel very weak my immune system is suffering. My neck, chest, arm, & the left side of my head was aching severely. Now that it's out I can rebuild my immune system. Sometimes we do what we think is best and that's saving a tooth. However next time listen to your body. We heard that voice say pull it but we didn't listen because who wants to lose a tooth. Next time people think of your health & not your look. I was prescribed ibuprofen, tylenol 3, & amoxicillin along with rest. I hope this is helful to someone Be blessed

I had a root canal done a year ago, it was infected before, took antibiotics to ease the pain, which helped, then got the root canal.  half way through a 4 hour job, the dentist tells me she dosen't think she can do a proper root canal, as my roots were very narrow and curved at the bottom.  I was like, well your in there now, so do the best you can, I had inquired about just getting the tooth pulled before, the dentist said, your young keep your teeth.  A year later my tooth star bugging me again, I go to the dentist and they say its infected but don't want to give me antibiotics, I went to the doctor and thy said its you right lower side, without even opening my mouth, thery said your face is swollen, you need antibiotics. last week,In the last month I've had all my teeth cleaned and last week i got 5 filling one beside the tooth with the root canal, ans it is super soar, my new dentist told  me I either had to get the root canal redone or the tooth pulled. but I going on vacation and said just give more antibiotics and will pull iit when i get back in a week. She doesn't want to give me the prescrition, and I kno i need it, as I'll be in the woods and have no way out.

Bottom line everyone I know how's had a root canal, ends up getting their tooth pulled later.  So my thought is save your time and money and pain, and get rid of the tooth. and get an implant later if you want

Well today is Thursday and two nights ago I awoke at 1 am with off-the-chart pain in the area of a root canal done almost one year ago to the day.  The pain was ridiculous and it reminded me of similar pain two months ago for which the dentist gave a round of antibiotics calling it "lack of floss and hygiene."  Now I know after spending the night in ER ditto to what everyone said in the comments, the root canal actually went bad.  I was up 36 hours, ER then sent me back to the dentist that did the root canal.  He said for me to go immediately to an endodontic.  I am scheduled today at 1 pm for the specialist to drill a hole in the crown and go way up into the end of the root canal and clean the tips out at the sinus wall.  In ER they gave me Vicodin 5/325 but waiting for daylight to come it did nothing for the pain.  At 7am I was at the dentist and they got me in my 8am.  After x-rays and a consultation there 3 shots given in the area and it was the first relief I had from many hours of excruciating pain.  I then asked for Vicodin that really works on extreme pain, 7.5/325, went to the pharmacy by 10am and received that and Amoxicillin 500 mg every 8 hours.  It is now just under 24 hours after starting the medication treatment and feeling less pain, but not all is gone.  In hindsight I had weeks leading up feeling intermittent nausea, allergy-like sneezing, and terrible malaise and feeling out of sorts, similar to a bacteria or flu infection - then the extreme pain kicked in two days ago.  Also there was about 3 weeks of the sensation of the nerves in the root canal tooth throbbing and moving when I walked.  The first dentist contacted the specialist immediately and offered to pay all I gave for his bill and apply $2,000 to his surgical fees, thanks be to God!  Hopefully today will go well, but if it does not they will try other procedures to try and save the tooth or worse case an extraction will be necessary.  By posting my experience here, I hope no one will have to ever go through this many months, days and hours of extreme pain.  If I had read something like this sooner I would have become more assertive and not let the medical system give mundane answers and push me around.  You really have to make lots of phone calls, get a doctor who will listen and take charge of this kind of pain.  Just because you can talk rationally, I learned that they misread that and declare you are not in as much pain as you say - even the phrmacist said this after he noticed the strength of Vicodin - very judgmental.  They will ask you to go home and take Tylenol.  Do not be pushed around until you get the extreme care you deserve.  If you go to ER make sure someone goes with you if at all possible.  They will not give a pain shot if they realize you have to drive home - only a prescription of weak strength Vicodin.  Get the shot in ER you will need it until this gets sorted out in the next 12 - 24 hours.  Good luck and God bless you!

I am 60 and had a problem with 3 root canal molars,my dentist says they look fine and you should go see a ENT. I've had this dentist look at these 3 teeth for years always there fine.Let me say I've been very sick with upper jaw pain all the way to the top of my head with my throat in a dull ache also with chest pain.I also suffer with a nasal infection on the same side. A product called bactoban ointment has helped that area, but the pain in my upper jaw continues. A peroxide mouth  wash helped a lot as well as a water pick. So I googled root canal teeth are they safe, and found out they are not.A large number of them continue to harbor many different strains of bacteria that course through your body degrading your immune system and this different strains of bacteria can cause over time many different ailments that can be attributed to a root canal. The idea is why would a doctor leave a dead body part in your body because the immune system continues to attack it.The out side part of a tooth has very little blood supply and the dentin or base of your root canaled tooth is porous and can leak bacteria from the tooth inside out into the sorounding tissues and will make you sick. There is only one cure pull the tooth, heal this area and save your money for a tooth implant. I know this not what you want to hear but it will solve the problem. In my opinion dentist only care about making money off of our perceived fear of loosing a permanent tooth, and root canaling and leaving a dead tooth in your head is not the answer. As for me I went to a biological dentist had these three molars extracted and with end two weeks all my symptoms that I have suffered with are gone. There are few books on the subject one being, The Toxic Tooth.

I am currently in my 20's. I have had the worse teeth known to man. I have 5 teeth in my mouth that have had root canals. For about two weeks now, I have been experiencing every pain known to man. I went to my dentist, she did X-rays and said I have ulcers in my mouth. She wanted to make sure so she sent me to the guy who does root canals. He looked at my mouth and tested my teeth. I reacked well and my teeth tested normal. I had all of these white spots all over my mouth and was very swollen just on the left side. He told me it was a form of Herpes Lecion and since I had been experiencing it for a while there was nothing he could perscribe me. I left and was very thankful there was not another root canal in my future. I am now on day 14 still in horrible pain. Yesterday I went to a gum specialist and he told me it wasnt Herpes Lecion its a muscle infection in my mouth and jaw and my gums are severly inflammed. He perscribed me a muscle relaxer and magic mouth wash. oh and to take advil during the day. This morning I woke up and the top tooth on the left side where all of this has been bothering me, the tooth that has had the root canal hurts and is now sensitive. Not sure if I should wait it out or call the dentist back. Maybe this is pain from the muscles..not sure????

    Would love ya'lls feedback??

I am in the same boat I had a new severe pain one day in one of my back molars . My uncle who normally pays for my dental bills passed away so instead of seeing my regular dentist I went to a local dental clinic where they told me my pain was due to a part of a filling that was missing. I told them it felt much more painful than that but of course they didn't listen. The soonest appointment they could give me to replace the filling was in a month! So I alternated Tylenol and Advil for almost 4 weeks to deal with the pain. The day before my appointment the clinic calls me to confirm my appointment ,or so I thought . But they actually needed to reschedule it for 5 days later. So I finally go in to get my filling and the dentist on staff has trouble removing the old silver filling. She finally gets it out but I'm bleeding so bad they can't get the new plastic one to stick correctly. They finally get it to take and I go home to rest. The next morning I wake up in complete agony and I know something is wrong. I look at my tooth and see that they only filled a tiny part of the tooth and most of it still has the old filling there plus I notice a small hole on the top of the molar. I go back to the clinic and the do another x Ray to find out the problem. Turns out I needed a root canal. They put me on antibiotics and I was able to find an Endodontist that brought me right in and did a new laser root canal that flushes the root out completely. He capped the tooth. But the infection was so bad it had spread to my cheek and jaw, down my neck it even feels like its in my ear. It's unbearable pain I'm experiencing and after resting the swelling and my cheek has not subsided! I feel like my jaw is going to explode. So I'm going to go to the emergency room. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.! I think they should pull the whole tooth!

A few years ago I was told I would eventually need a  root canal in tooth #14 as the tooth  was filled to capacity with Resin and Silver.  Well low an behold this same tooth started to hurt in Sept.  I contacted my dentist an he was on vacation.  Just my luck!!  Finally he returns an tells me I need   root canal/post/crown.  That will be  only $1,900.   I proceeded as  I wanted to save the tooth.  I never experienced such pain  as I did with constant headaches, memory loss,  blurred vision and dizzieness. Yes he did the procedure in 2 visits. On  the last visit he had to give  me 5 shots of Novacaine  which numbed me up to my left eye.  He then  put the post in and covered the tooth with resin so it wouldn't  break  til I got the  Crown.   In Oct i relocated to another state an   in early November I noticed a bump  on the gum where the procedure took place.

I then  saw another  dentist an he said that the tooth would need to be extracted.  I thought that perhaps if i flossed, used Stim-u-dents,  and rinsed with hydrogen peroxide that that would do the trick.  It did!  Yes!  It lasted   2 months.  In Janurary the  symptons returned  but worse.  The gums  burned an my head hurt even worse.  Now  i was holding on to things so i could walk, could not sleep at night  nor remember anything that anyone told me. My  work was suffering too as   my production  has  fallen. To sleep at night I found the only way to sleep was to take  a shot of wine to knock me out.  Since i don't drink this definately worked!  This past Tues I visited the dentist again  an  he xrayed the tooth.  I was told that the root  canal was fine but the infection was below the  tooth in the gum and part of the bone.  The doctor then said that he could do the root canal over for $1,200,  but it was not guaranteed.  I told him to remove the tooth.   When he finally got that tooth out he exclaimed, "Oh....look at that!  Its a good thing we pulled that tooth as there's a  big  infection in there".  He  then proceeded to  pack some medication in there an sent me on my way  with  Ampilcillin &  Percosets.     I would suggest that  you take the tooth out.   After x amount of months  it will heal an then you can get a  false tooth that will never bother you again.  I know I will.

I am also going to follow up with a blood test  to see if anything else is wrong.

    Good Luck

I got a "CRP" blood test-- it was helpful in that it showed that I had a severe infection of some sort, a lot of inflammation, and also anemia. several months later I had another one and the levels had dropped after antibiotics. hope this helps. ps never take cipro, ever. just google cipro and lawsuits, i'm still having side-effects.

I have had the same trouble-- I've had 32 root canals (4 retreatments) and ended up having about 6 of those teeth pulled. The excruciating pain you described is very farmiliar to me-- I think you have a bone infection (osteomyelitis). Mine happens to be located along the trigeminal nerve-- it sounds like yours may be as well. Due to the above issues- basically that after root canals I still had excruciating pain- I ended up having many oral surgeries called apicoectomies (not spelled correctly). They solved my issues - the procedure pretty much taps into the bone where the abcess is and scrapes out all the pus. Recently, I had two apico's, and no relief- hence the diagnosis of osteomyelitis. 6 weeks of heavy antibiotics- some people are put on IV antibiotics... anyway, long story longer- march 1st i'm getting the tooth pulled. hopefully that will be the end of it. please let me know how things have been going with your teeth- and Oragel-- severe pain PM has saved my sanity-- any drug store should have it. NEVER use Ambesol- the pain is worse when it wears off!

Im going through the same thing. I had a root canal in January . It took him 5 x to do the root canal. He always said dont have enough time i have to close it up i have another patient. And he would only schedule 45 min to an hour appt. To do the root canal. Anyway during all that time I've been on 4 antibiotics. Feeling ill and a lot of pain in the jaw bone, gums and teeth. Now I have tested for an autoimmune disease. Im suppose to see him on Monday the 18th of April to crown it but my antibiotic was finished a day ago and its swelling again. I think im going to pull it if doesnt get better by Monday. And then im done with that doctor and go get a bridge with another doctor. Im tired of pain killers and antibiotics, Tylenol .
