Dental Implants advice

My wife and I are having Dental Implants this week due to problems with dentures. Any tips or advice from anyone who has had the procedure would be most welcome. Advised that sedation is best for a stress free treatment, and any comments on this as well.

I recently had Dental Implants and didn't experience much pain. I was given sedatives so that may be why It didn't hurt. There was some soreness for a few days afterward but everything feels fine now. If you are nervous about the procedure I recommend reading this article

Dental implant is not painful at all. In my experience patients who had undergone dental implants have zero to minimal discomfort. Most of my patients required local anesthesia for this procedure. So there is nothing to worry about the procedure.

Thanks for replies, my wife had hers done on Wednesday with no problem and very little pain, bruises are coming out now. Am going for mine this afternoon and he has told me I cannot have sedation because of tablets I am on. Shaking like a leaf just now more at the thought of extractions.

Well my wife had 2 implants put in on Wednesday and only felt the injections a little. No pain since but was given steroids , antibiotics and pain killers. Bruises came out on her chin yesterday but feeling great and only annoying thing is waiting for stitches to dissolve.  I had 3 implants put in on Friday, felt a couple of injections and one of my teeth being extracted ended up with 2 roots and was difficult to come out, the other was no problem. Little bit of a problem with one implant as the bleeding from one of the teeth kept washing the anaesthetic away as my blood is thin from blood thinners although I stopped them 2.5 days before. Had to keep topping up anaesthetic as bit of pain in drilling, had to use 5 phials of anaesthetic. After that I said are you not doing the back one, and he said I did it earlier and had felt nothing. Used a new system of not cutting the gum back and drilled through so only needed 2 stitches altogether. Given same tablets as my wife, no pain but still bleeding a little today. Now we have to wait 3 months, but he has given me a temporary plate which is really comfortable so much better than other one. Done with 3D laser only so no mouthfuls of gunge for imprint. Sam at City Quay Dental, Dundee certainly knows his stuff and a very gentle and calming Dentist, who even offered to allow me to stand up for some work to be done if I got cramps from my knees, fortunately did not need that as too busy thinking about procedure. Did not need sedation at all, and think it would have been a waste of time in this instance.

Hi, how did your treatment go ? I have been told that I may have a cracked root and may not be able to have a root canal so will either have to have a bridge, and this would mean crowning 2 perfect teeth either side 😔 or an implant. This has terrified the life out of me as the thought of the implant going into the jaw bone. I’ve also read about risks about nerve damage. So stressed. Any info about your experience would be appreciated

Alanorah, Procedure was superb and much better than having root canal treatment and crowns as far quicker. Only thing is we have to wait for 3 to 6 months before the bridge can be put in place to allow the implant to bond and become secure to the bone.  I did raise concern over nerves being touched and Sam said he had not had any problems to date. In the past I have had bad electric shocks from only injections which can hit nerves, but never felt a thing.  Only thing I would do different is probably have 4 days off blood thinners before another extraction. Other comment is many years ago I wish this was being done as although expensive it would have saved me money and time not having crowns and eventually having them extracted.

For me and my wife it has been first class and certainly would recommend. Think it is worth trying to find personal recommendations on Dentists for this work as I think one or two practices can rob you as you can't really see what is required and have to accept their word as in my research I found one con artist.

Thank you for the advice, I’m going to see an Endodontist Jan 9th , to see if the tooth can be saved, my dentist says he suspects it has a cracked root so an implant is an option and a bridge is the other but that would mean ruining 2 healthy teeth either side. I will do my research as to who and the prices they charge as my current dentist is new to the practice and specialises in implant! How convenient I thought. But maybe I’m a bit cynical

You have reassured me on the procedure as I was beginning to start having really bad anxiety about it.

    Thank you

    best wishes

Hi Alanorah,  In my opinion now, it would be an implant as I would not want to damage the teeth at the side by having them cut down for implants. You normally would be advised to wait 6 months after for the gum to heal after extraction and the Dentist can give you a temporary denture to use plus use it for the 3 - 6 month period to allow it to grow in before fitting the tooth. In Poland , Bulgaria etc they say they can put them in same day but Sam says better for them to be settled before any strain on then which may slacken the screw so that it comes out.  Would recommend a local search of another Dentist in your area doing Implants and get a quote and a quote from your own Dentist. By the way if you use an electric toothbrush make sure it is a rotating one to get down to the gums as the Hygienist says they are by far the best, and also rub it over your palate.

Many thanks for getting back to me

And the good info regarding the rotating toothbrush.

I totally agree with you on not wanting to damage the teeth either side!

    Will keep u posted

Deborah, That sounds good by the way I had a single tooth replaced at the back to improve my bite and it costs £2200 here.  Look forward to hearing how you get on. We are at the stage of fishing out bits of dissolved stitches !.
