dental work and infection confusion

Posted , 11 users are following.

I know theres a few of these discussions but mines a bit different and im a bit confused.

So iv had a wisdom tooth been coming through for months and its been agony, couldnt even put my teeth together without tearing up.

I went to my dentist yesterday, I have a severe infection in my gums because my top wisdom tooth is grinding into the gum were the bottom wisdom tooth is trying to grow through. I have to have my top wisdom tooth removed.

Now my concern is with a fairly new hip joint and a very new metal pin and plate in my collarbone, what are the chances of infection getting into my bloodstream and causing all sorts of havock like sepsis ect. My dentist said nothing about antibiotics ect.

Anyone got any knowledge on this kinda problem? Xx

    Hi Sarah,

I asked a question about going hygienist and needing antibiotics, the response from everyone was, have antibiotics. I'd go bk to your dentist or doctor and get some. Best be safe than sorry. Hope you're better soon.

Hi. I had the root of a broken crown removed at five months post op. The dentist said only people who have had heart valves require prophylactic antibiotics with dental work. I spoke to my surgeon and arthroplasty nurse at the Royal National Orthopaedic hospital in London who confirmed that current thinking was that I didn't need antibiotics- especially in view of the overuse of them leading to then becoming ineffective in an emergency situation. I too have read discussions on here and think that maybe the thinking in the UK and USA is different. There was someone called Maggie on here who worked in a hospital laboratory who was really good with this sort of thing. I would speak to your surgeon if you can as only he/she can really advise you. Good luck with it.

    Sarah,

I'm in the US ... had THR 4 months ago.  My dentist had prescribed an antibiotic for me to take one hour prior to having my teeth cleaned last month.  She said that I'd need to take one for any dental proceedure for a while (not sure how long).

Sue. I think this is definitely a US/UK thing as when I mentioned antibiotics before cleaning the surgeon laughed and the dentist said absolutely not.

It is. I was told current research evidence suggested that there was no risk with dental work - due to more modern techniques and hardware. Also that the massive over prescribing of antibiotics in the first world was leading to more and more antibiotics becoming ineffective and bacteria becoming more and more resistant, which makes sense.

    Hi Sarah,

I went for a check up about 6 weeks ago.  I informed my dentist that I had a THR in March and that I had read something about possibly needing antibiotics if I had an infection.  He rolled his eyes and said that information was about 20 years out of date.  I often hear my dentist on local radio as he is the head of his practice and also the spokesman for the county's dental committee, so I reckon he knows his stuff.

Nice to hear fro you hun, how are you?

Better safe than sorry, here in the USA it's up to your surgeon as to what guide lines he follows. I don't want my hip removed because of a dental infection...Your choice!

Actually, it's my dentist's choice really Loral, I'm just quoting him here.

My surgeon wants me to take antibiotics before any procedure that cuts skin, especially dental for life, I had to give a letter to my dentist from my surgeon before my dentist would touch me. That's the way it works here. My surgeons choice, not my dentists choice.
