Dental work apparently not covered on NHS?

Hoping someone can shed some light on my current situation. I have been told by my dentist today that I need root canal treatment, but the roots are bent, which means that only a specialist can carry out the procedure, and this will NOT be covered by NHS. they have referred me and advised me it will cost upwards of £600.00. I'm so confused as this doesn't seem right at all.
I feel like I dont have any options. Obviously this is a lot of money (that I don't really have!) Please can anyone confirm if this is correct? Feel like my teeth are being held ransom!!

Normally if your Dentist cannot do the work they refer you to a local Dental Hospital where treatment is free of charge. If you have to pay it could be worth considering implants that would last for life.

Thanks all, i contacted my local dental hospital who informed me that i should be referred to them for free. They advised that my dentist should not have told me that my only option was to go private as it wasn't covered on NHS- They are likely trying their luck. Stay aware, you never know when you might be misled ... even by a reputable NHS organisation!!!
