Depo Lupron for Hysterectomy

Posted , 5 users are following.

I need to get a Hysterectomy. The Dr. whom I have never met before wants me to take the Depo Lupron shot and a month later get the hysterectomy. Everything I have read said you do it after 3 months. I'm very nervous. I said to take with iron but iron was never mentioned and absolutely no blood work has been done. Is all of this ok

I would say, that the doctor owed you an explanation why he wants you to do this, and discuss the side effects that will occur.  I agree with you that blood work should have been requested for his review, at your initial appointment.  It is one means of determining your health prior to scheduling an operation.

I am not a medical professional, but most hospitals require that blood work be completed at least one week prior to surgery--but to me, one week isn't sufficient.  What if another condition is identified, and your surgery needs to be cancelled?  Seems sloppy to me.

I'd suggest that you get a second opinion. xx

The lupron shot is good for 3 months, it does not have to be done after the 3 months. It’s best if it’s done within those 3 months. I was on the shot for 4 months, and received total of 2 shots so it would cover my surgery date.

I also did my blood work 2 days before my surgery as my doctor wanted everything to be as up to date as possible. Hope this helps

I had my blood work done two weeks prior to my surgery. I also had the lupron shot to reduce the size of my tumors to avoid a bilateral incision one month prior to surgery. Thankfully the lupron reduced the size of the tumors and i was able to get a bikin cut TAH   I’m assuming the lupron was prescribed to you to reduce bleeding? I have read that iron should be taken, but i believe you have to stop taking it within a time period before surgery. Sounds like you have a lot of questions for your doctor. Good luck

How was your recovery and how did the shot make you feel?

I had zero side effects from the shot. And I have heard from others that it significantly reduced their bleeding with little to no side effects. I was scared to death prior to surgery. But i went into it with a positive attitude and had a very quick recovery even at 51 years old.

How long did it take you to recover and how long were you out of work.

Back story :I broke my ankle few months before and was out of work for 7 weeks. So having to have the hyterectomy, I already had in my mind I needed to get back to work asap. I have a desk job and am able to sit all day. I went back 2 weeks post op. Lucky enough to get a ride in and home.  I hit a wall every day at 2 pm and am still in bed before 8 pm due to exhaustion. But I continued to walk when i could and got back to life as much as i could  My advice is to listen to your body. I knew when I was pushing myself too far and rested. I am now back in the gym with moderate weight training. Doing what I can when I feel I can.
