Depo Provera can weaken bones

I've been puzzling why I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I know it happens when you get older. I am 70 but have never smoked, not a big drinker, always played sports and was a weightlifter. I don't need calcium of vit D supplements. I spend so much time out in the fesh air and sun. Then I read about the possibility that taking Depo Provera could weaken bones. I had Depo Provera injections as a contraceptive when I was in South America in my 20s. I think I had them for 2 years or a little more. Has anyone had the same experience? Nothing I can do about it now but I would just like to know whether that made a difference.

I have heard the same and I was on it for 5 years from age of 50. It was never mentioned to me and I am really annoyed about it as I have a family history of osteoporosis and asked to be tested but was told I wasn't high risk. I'm now 60 and lumbar is -4.6

I'm sorry to hear that. You really should have been told. It was so long ago for me and being in South America I didn't think anything about side effects. Nothing like that was mentioned. There is nothing I can do about it now but I am wary about taking any medication. I'm lucky that I can get away with it.
