depression and anxiety

Started taking sertraline 50mg for depression and anxiety I also have agoraphobia at the moment too.  Had all the side effects mentioned in the leaflet feel worse than when I first started taking it, been vomiting and dry retching sine the first day.  The doctor has given me anti sickness tablets which make me feel drowsy. He has also given me a small dose of 5 mg diazepam which I am using sparingly because he says he won’t prescribe any more.  Feel very low and not functioning at all, lost weight because I can’t eat just living on toast and a bit of soup. Has anybody got any advice please

How long have you been on that dose for?  Most people start out with 25mg and then move up to 50mg after a couple of weeks to help with the side effects.  I also increased my dose by 50mg and the side effects have been awful.  I substituted eating with sipping on protein shakes when I could.  For most people the side effects subside over a week or 2,  I am 3 1/2 weeks in and starting to be able to eat more.  Lost 10 lbs so far.  It does did get better though,  your appetite is usually one of the first things to get better.  Hopefully someone else can chime in and let you know what worked for them.  Most of the people on here like in the UK,  so they are 7 hours ahead of the US and you might not get a response until tomorrow.  Hang in there.  The first few weeks are horrible,  but well worth it.

Hi there I felt exactly the same 3 weeks ago and was prescribed the same meds as you for the same reason. My advice.... hang in there, the side effects will ease off. I still have nausea 3 weeks but the depression and anxiety and general feeling of doom is gradually lifting. Have found this forum a wonderful help to put your mind at rest. So many people going through the same thing. Be kind to yourself x

Im also having trouble with agoraphobia which interestingly started after taking the meds. I can put up with everything else but this has been the hardest. If you find anything that helps please let me know and I will for you. Been trying to kick this for a while starting therapy this week.

I am trying to get some therapy sorted but because of the agoraphobia this is proving difficult because therapists want to see you in their own premises I will keep trying though.

I'm doing cbt over the phone through a charity called I cope in Kingston. I don't know if they have them nationwide but worth a look?
