Depression and thyroid

Hi. Ive been treated for severe clinical depression for approx. 25 yrs. After a blood test, today my Dr. informed me i had a thyroid condition & put me on 5 mcg. of Liothyronine; Something to do w/ T3 levels? I'm praying this drug will have a positive impact on my depression. It seems hopeless at times. Anyone in a similiar situation?

    Hi

is this the first time your thyroid has been tested?

Depression is one of the many symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Generally T4 is give for hypothyroidism but T3 (Liothyronine) is given sometimes along with T4 or sometimes as in your case given alone.

I think your T3 level must be under range for your Doctor to give you Liothyronine.

5mcg. is a starting dose, does your Doctor intend to increase it after a few weeks?

Liothyronine, I have read is also given to for depression when anti depressants do not work.

Do you have your results of your thyroid tests, in the U.K. you are entitled to them from your Doctor.

Post them here if you have them.

If you are interested I can also supply you with two excellent thyroid support groups who will give you help and advice.
