Depression from not drinking coffee

I am 19 years old, and I used to be addicted to caffeine...for about 4 years from like 14-19. It's been about 8 months and I think by now all the symptoms of withdrawal should be gone but I just don't feel the same. At some points I feel even better, but mostly I feel detached from the world...and depressed.  And I don't have a good mood/feel normal until late afternoon. i don't have the same spiritual connection and happiness i naturally got from drinking coffee every day. But I don't know if the depression came from my toxic ex who was depressed and getting over the relationship or giving up caffeine because i gave up both at the same time.

so I'm struggling to decide whether to drink coffee again to see if i feel better...but what if thats not what the depression is from? So i don't know. not only did i lose part of myself from not drinking it, i gained weight, lost motivation, got depression (questionable what caused this one), and really lost the ability to enjoy life..but on the bright side, i don't have to be addicted to something and drink it for the rest of my life to feel normal. But was it worth it? I also got GI digestive problems when i would drink it....so idk. Do you think I should go back to coffee/maybe on antidepressants/stay away from caffeine? What should I do? Im also in college and don't need it necessarily to keep me awake or anything.

    Hello,

In my opinion the depression could just be from your ex bf and the not drinking coffee! I am a nutritionist and in my opinion if you were addicted to coffee..I would recommend taking a break from it, let your body get rid from the toxins, try to go to the gym or work out at home, do some exercises, yoga should be good for your body! Read a motivated book and set goals for your self, wake up everyday with a feeling like you are going to have a good day and accomplish something ! Substitute the coffee for something else ,’ maybe tea? 3 cups a day or so is okay and when you are ready and wanting coffee 2-3 a day max no more ! smile

I'm no dr but I can tell you that caffeine is a drug-it's addicting and you will have withdrawal symptoms when you give it up. However, some caffeine is ok for you. Asthmatics use a cup of strong coffee to help with attacks. Some people cant function without coffee. If you do go back on it, try decaf or only drink a small amount of regular.  I tell everyone I know to go the natural route if you can. Before you down meds do research on how you are feeling and try herbs. they are not habit forming and you will feel better in the long run. I am 67 and I have been using herbs and essential oils for years. I can't tolerate meds ( I react to them) so I take very little medicine. I am also a believer in Jesus Christ and I can tell you that you will not feel spiritual from drinking coffee. My daughter suffered from severe depression to the extent of cutting herself. She went to a nature path and he recommended her getting off gluten and all her symptoms disappeared. She has been gluten free for several years. She has an intolerance to gluten. You could look into that. I hope this all helps.
