Depression, Menopause or Both?

I am 53 and I have been on Sertraline 50mg for 8 weeks. I started to feel like I was turning a corner 2 weeks ago then both my Mum and Son were ill. This has set me back albeit not as bad as I was but The overwhelming feelings have returned and the loss of appetite. I have little interest in anything but have to continue as I'm a single working parent with 3 teenage children with busy sporting lives. Being an independent strong woman normally in control with a bubbly personality I am finding this feeling unbearable. Gosh when will I feel normal, happy, interested again?

Sorry to hear that your son and mom got ill. I just know that even when I am well on med, if I have a stressful event, I will still feel more anxiety and usually pop half an extra does here and there. So I think you might want to consider upping your dose for awhile. 50mg is a low dose anyways. Take care.

Thanks for your reply. I have been to the Drs and he's increased my dose to 100mg. I didn't really want to but he said I'm only on a low dose and I've a lot to deal with ongoing. I can't bear nor afford to be as ill as I was initially as primarily my children need me plus I don't want to be off work.

I do feel this is menopause fed plus the stresses I'm under which unfortunately will be around for a while.

Has Sertraline helped you and do you think it's the menopause too?

Oh, sert has been a life-saving drug for me, but I can tell right off that my condition is a lot more severe than yours. My first attack was second year in college and I have been on and off sert maybe around 8 times. I am 43 yrs old.

For you, yes, I am pretty sure your situation has to do with menopause. Even in the old days, I noticed my anxiety and OCD increased around time of my monthly ladies holiday with all the hormones acting up. You might also want to look at HTR.

Yes, 50mg is a low dose. It's a dose to get your body to be better cope with the side effects with a higher dose.

Yeah, I hear ya about work. Work is bad enough as it is, but add this illness to it, with med bills, doc appointments and insurance claims, and you with kids... Take care. Try not to get stressed and try to be gentle with yourself.
