Depression or other health symptoms from butane?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the above with butane, or with any other form of solvent abuse like aerosols or glue?

In an article on Dec. 11, 2009, about a woman's 20-year campaign to warn others about abuse of chemicals in over-the-counter items, The Guardian said that "volatile substance abuse (VSA) kills more children aged 10 to 15 than all illegal drugs put together. More than a third of VSA deaths are first-time users," the article said.

Barbara Skinner found her 16-year-old son dead in 1988 after he sniffed a solvent/propellent from an aerosol deodorant can.

    Shocking!

They should make these things have such disgusting smell that none will inhale them.

    That's actually a brilliant idea!

There's a substance in rubbing alcohol that prevents people from drinking it. I can imagine it would be possible to cause the propellant, when it's improperly 'accessed', to smell of rotten eggs, or spoiled beef, or some such. (But then those products would attract an even weirder audience than they already do!)

The gas we use for cooking and heating has no smell, they put the smell in so that we know when we leave something on!
