Depression...Treatment resistant depression to be specific

Hi

Hope you are well!

I wanted someones advice as I am very hopeless at the moment, the first pysc I went to we have tried 6 antidepressants and none of them worked...they had no effect on me at all, apart from say a dry mouth...but ultimately nothing!

He said I am treatment resistant..so he transferred me to another one,who put me on fluoxitine/prozac and we tested it for 4/5 weeks..then the dosage went up,the only effect was that I couldnt climax...(sorry to be specific lol)

The window we have tested each antidepressant has being the most 8-12 weeks..

I have had no results with any of the pills we have tried..the pysc has told me to go back on prozac/fluoxitine and then well implement lithium...but even with that im scared that wont work! if it doesnt I will just give up on life...im too tired!

she also said if it doesnt work I should look into TMS !

I need help as Im coming to my end

hi tim, i have never been an advocate of antidepressants. don't take them and insist you are offered alternatives. my doctor's despair with me because i refuse to try any antidepressants at all. i have had such bad reaction and time with them that i have said no to the lot. when i asked for them i was told no! i can't win. all i know is you need to know the underlying cause of your depression not that you are depressed. that's like telling a diabetic they could lose weight. i have tried mindfulness and spoken to a company who offer mental health support. my reason for my difficulties is assault, simple as that so i am now having specific support. i would try this first. think what may have caused this and ring some mental health charities, Richmond fellowship comes to mind. good luck, i'll be thinking of you....

    Hi Tim

I have had depression for 17 years and had success in the early days but now I am like you.

I have been on most of the antidepressants and I am frightened now as I don't know what else they can do. I started on Venlafaxine and they just kept increasing the dose but it was the only one that worked. Then one of my GPs said it can cause heart problems!

The physciatrist (excuse spelling) took me off them in March and tried me on varioua others all to no avail.

I asked him if I could go back on Ven. He wasn't very keen but he has started me on the lowest dose and I am feeling ghastly. I see him again next week but I am not expecting too much. I dread getting up of a morning as I don't want to do anything. I am lucky that I feel better late evening. I always have. How about you?

What is TMS I don't think I have heard of it. I hope you start to feel better Tim. Between this and the Coronavirus life is terrible morning.

    Regards Pat

    Hello Tim

Firstly let me say in all seriousness .... Do not listen to people on the internet ..... 99% their agenda is themselves and they tell you what their problems are which does nothing positive for you.

Secondly, my wife is a Dr of Psychology and whilst this is 100% myself talking, after 30+ years together I know a great more than the average person about the subject

Thirdly I take Venlafaxine myself plus have taken many others ... Personally I suffered massive onset RA and went from a normal working human being, multiple business owner and motorcycle racer to ... cannot work, power wheelchair in 3 months flat .... Hence I got a tad depressed.

What precisely does "The medications do not work" actually mean? That is not a question for you to answer for me, it is a question to answer of yourself ... What is it you are expecting to happen that doesn't?

Myself I have a plethora of illnesses and so take 30+ tablets a day plus two injections and have for the last decade+ ...... My anti depression tablets do not make me 'happy' and turn me into a comedian ... They merely flatten it all out at best ... My RA drugs do not stop the pain I have in all my joints, the issues with my digestive system and that my eyes often do not work .... they just damp it down.

In truth I have no idea what you are looking for out of medication but I have a horrible feeling it may be unrealistic ... Maybe lower your sights.

Plus be aware that once you batter your way through all available meds, you end up in a place which is not good, with your clinicians struggling and you struggling ... Maybe slow down, retry some of the meds and think about what you expect to achieve by their use ..... Because a chemically created Nirvana is not an option unfortunately.

TMS? {Gallic shrug} .... They used to give people lobotomies and ECT because they thought that was a bright idea; didn't mean they were correct.

    Good fortune to you.

Antidepressant medication is half the job, it seems you issues are not chemically induced but are emotionally aggravated. It means that medication will not help you what you need to do, which is let things go, and also work on your mental state in other ways apart from medication. Perhaps there might be a medication that can help you, but ultimately you have to personally do things to overcome your depression.
