Dermoid Cysts

Hi,

I had a large dermoid cyst on my left ovary and had it, along with my ovary, removed six years ago. I've now found another dermoid cyst on my right ovary (remaining ovary). My gynaecologist wanted to discuss the next step with other professionals as obviously I want to have children in the future as I'm only 27. Has anyone ever been in my situation?? Or is there anyone else out there going through this? I can't believe this has returned again.

    Hi!

Oh I have been in your shoes. I’ll try to shorten my story.

I always had pain in my left side from about 16 years old, but nobody could every find out why! I learned to live with it..ended up pregnant unexpectedly when I was 17. Had my daughter vaginally.

9 years later at 27 years old, got pregnant again unexpectedly. Had my second daughter by c-section and they found that my left ovary was the size of a large grapefruit, taken over by a dermoid. They removed it, but for some reason they left the tube.

My periods continued to be regular and they assume that the left ovary probably hadn’t worked in some years.

Me and my husband decided to try for one more baby, four years later. When we started trying, I started having pain on my right side.

Dr did a laparoscopy and found a small dermoid on my remaining ovary. He left it alone at my request and I went to see a fertility specialist to see what they recommended I do.

The dr said that I could leave it and try to conceive, and they could remove it later.

So I continued to try and ended up getting pregnant 17 months later. Unfortunately, our baby girl passed away when I was 22 weeks pregnant (unrelated to the cyst).

So now we are ttc again. The cyst is close to 5cm, but my fertility dr is okay with it and watches it closely. We found out the reason it took so long and is taking so long again to get pregnant, is my husbands sperm motility, rather than my cyst.

My egg supply (Amh) is fine, even with one ovary and being 35 now.

Do you know that size your cyst is?

If I were you, I would have a consultation with a fertility specialist before making a decision. They are the ones who will care more about your fertility. A regular gyn will usually just tell you to remove it immediately without a thought.

If you have anymore questions, I wouldn’t mind answering them.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby girl.

My gynaecologist has decided to leave it there and monitor it but the cysts have gotten smaller. If it has to be taken out it'll be key hole surgery this time. I feel like and expert after all these cysts!! Hopefully I won't have any difficulty conceiving.

My last cyst was 22cm but thankfully this one is much smaller. Last night they measured 1cm in diameter.

Thanks again for sharing your story.
