Dermoid Ovarian Cyst

Hello.

I have just been diagnosed with a 10cm dermoid cyst. I had never heard of this before and after doing a little research - am scared stiff! I am awaiting a consultation appointment to discuss surgery but have been advised it is likelyl to be removed by open surgery due to the size - and may involve removing my right ovary too. I am 51 so not concerned with fertility - just recovery! I have also been advised surgery is likely to be in around 3 months but this does seem a long time to me. After suffering years of pain in my right side/groin and just returning home from 6 days in hospital with what appeared to be torsion - I am quite scared. What is an average recovery time for this type of op? In these difficult times (I work for my local authority) I worry about having a long time from work.

I've never had an operation and I am really scared silly. Any advice would be most welcome please.

Thank you

Dawn

I was just diagnosed with what looks like a dermoid cyst on both of my ovaries sad I just turned 31 and reaaalllly want to have children soon! My husband and I planned on starting to try this summer. Has anyone heard of someone having dermoid cysts removed and getting pregnant after? My dr made it sound like removing them would help me get pregnant as I may not be ovulating with the cysts in my ovaries anyways.

Advice or experience with fertility after cyst removal?

I know this is past the time of discussion but having just come across this myself I'm sure there are plenty of women benefiting from this today still!

I have just had a 10 x 8cm dermoid cyst removed from my left ovary (New Years Eve spent on the operating table woohoo!). The wonderful (NHS) surgeon warned that it was unlikely she would be able to salvage the ovary, so I was delighted to learn soon after coming around, that she'd saved it-particularly as I'm only 22.

I came around from my surgery just after 6pm and by morning had started walking, washing and able to urinate without the need of a catheter.

Everyone I know in the medical profession (including my auntie who is an experienced midwife) has said the same about remobilising quickly to recover sooner which is absolutely true (push through the initial discomfort but dont overdo it)!

I am however in AGONY with gas pressure in my shoulders and ribs which has reduced me to tears this evening. This isn't a post-surgery thing that they warn you about! The only thing other than moving around which I've found to help is the peppermint tea.

Good luck to future patients- as someone with crippling anxiety I expected this experience to be a lot worse than it actually was..except the horrid trapped gas!

I really hope you see this and pray that you will reply to me. my situation is that 24 years ago at age 24 it was discovered that I had dermoidcysts on my ovaries. One was 16x12cm and the other 9x6cm. I had all my right ovary removed and practically all the left. I was told that I would never have children and was put on HRT immediately. I attended a fertility clinic 6 months after the surgery and was advised to come off the HRT for a a short period to see if I had any ovarian function. I started having periods naturally and was told that there may be a small possibilty I could have kids. Thankfully, I went on to have 2 children and periods for 14 years. However I went into early menopause at age 39. Now my worst nightmare has come true, my 21 year old daughter has just discivered that she now has dermoid cysts. Her ultrasound advises that one is 11x9cm and that she has whats known as a simple cyst measuring 6x4cm. I just cannot believe that this is happening again. She has been advised that she she is now to have an MRI scan and then we have to meet to discuss surgery. Obviously I am so worried that she may end up losing all her ovaries at such a young age. We were told that they can't really tell for sure until they have a look inside but the MRI should give a better indication. They have also said that keyhole surgery is unlikely given the size of one of the cysts. I just wondered if anyonecould please advise me what type of surgery they had? Also could you advise me if they told you how they were able to preserve her ovary given the size of the cyst? I just would like as much information as I can get before we speak to the surgeon. We live in Northern Ireland and I want to be sure that we are doing all we canin terms of best surgery. I am so scared of what the outcome of this will be. I would be so grateful if you could get back to me. Any advice  would be appreciated 0  Report this

Hello, I know this original post is rather old but I'm hoping to receive some advice. I found out i have a dermoid cyst in April it was 4 cm. I went to the emergency room and got an MRI done because of pelvic pain. I went to my OBGYN a month later and he scheduled me for a follow up 3 months later. We didn't talk about surgery because it has only hurt two or three times during the night and that was it. Now in June my pain was much more frequent. Especially during my menstrual cycle it hurt just about every night. During the night it seems to hurt more. I went to another OBGYN because I was in another city and was told the cyst was now 5cm. I knew I wanted surgery because the pain is debilitating. My surgery is scheduled in August. Tonight the pain was so bad I couldn't walk and threw up. After pain medication the pain went away. But I had to leave work because of this. I want to get surgery as soon as possible because I don't want this pain anymore. Yes it's only intermittent but it's the worse pain. And I don't want it affecting my daily life anymore. Was anyone able to get surgery scheduled soon after their appointment? Or did you have to wait a period of time before the actual surgery date. I am in the US. I was told I would get a da Vinci laparoscopic cystectomy for the surgery in August.
