Dermoids and Adhesions

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have had 3 lots of dermoid ovarian cysts removed in 1993/2003/2004. Since then I have had gallbladder and appendectomy.

Currently being treated for a UTI with really bad back pain and swollen lower left abdo. The latest results are clear with no bacteria. The doctor is now arranging an ultrasound for my pelvis to rule out cysts. I think it could well be adhesions as I have also been constipated for a few months now and I was told on my last op that my bowel and ovaries were all stuck with other bits.

What tests are there to see what adhesions you have?

Caroline25937 had a similar question, may I give you the link:

If you search the internet "utility of magnetic resonance imaging in postoperativ confirmed adhesion cases" you might find the full report with pictures, that I cannot attach here as a pdf.

Some pages give an overall conclusion (but not showing the imaging, e.g.: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26466105).

Adhesions might be seen by MRI, but it seems early days and requires training of radiologist.

    Amanda,

I had a CT (MRI is better). It is difficlt to diagnose soft tissue in finite detail until they go in. But from my CT my surgeon could tell my bowel and a kidney were compromised by endometrial tissue.

My only symptoms (I thought) were severe constipation and very frequent peeing.

He prepped me for a possible bowel resection (not required, whew) and saved my kidney by removing the tissue constricting the artery supplying it. He also removed the huge cysts that were the root of it all.

Ultrasound is able to roughly determine size and sometimes type of cyst. But the uplevel imaging gives the surgeon a much better picture of what is there.

You could have issues fully emptying your bladder causing a UTI. I would think something more than just adhesions is involved based on your history.

    Hope this helps.

I have my date for ultrasound to be done on pelvis, abdomen and renal. It is on Monday, so hopefully that will rule out a cyst.
