Desperate for a solution - chronic Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Posted , 15 users are following.

I am 23 years old and have been suffering from chronic Eustachian tub dysfunction (ETD) for almost 2 years now. Just before my graduation from university in May 2016, I got an extremely bad cold, resulting in stuffy ears (what I fondly refer to as my earmuff sensation). Unfortunately, my ears never went back to normal.

Finally, in July 2016, I went to see an ENT specialist at Vanderbilt University and he diagnosed my ETD and told me that, at that point, the only option was to wait it out and it may resolve itself. In November 2016, I visited another ENT in Miami, FL to get a second opinion. He confirmed my ETS diagnosis and told me to see my original ENT.

In March 2017, I received the ballon dilation procedure with the ACCLARENT AERA device. My ETD did not improve. In August 2017, my ENT informed me that my Eustachian tubes couldn’t not handle a second dilation procedure and my only option was to receive tympanostomy tubes. I agreed and allowed him to insert them in the clinic without general anesthesia. The tubes did not improve my ETD, in fact, it seems to be worse.

Please- can someone help. I am desperate for a solution to help my hearing return to normal. I use Flonase daily and I have gone through countless boxes of Sudafed in hopes of reversing my ETD. I cry every night. I feel hopeless.

My issues started on New Year's Day.  For four months I had constant clogging, crackling, popping, pulling and was generally miserable.  While I'm not cured, I am a lot better.  I tested positive for food and environmental allergies so I eliminated the foods and started allergy shots.  My ENT thought I had TMJ and sent me to a specialist who confirmed I did have it.  Wearing a bite splint to take the pressure off my facial muscles and going to PT has really helped my ears too.  Since TMJ is usually a muscle issue I take anxiety medication to try and stay relaxed.  So between the food allergen elimination, allergy meds, allergy shots, physical therapy, anxiety treatment and splint therapy I have greatly improved but I'm still not back to normal.  Maybe some day!   My next step is a jaw repositioning splint but I am reluctant to move forward.  It's expensive with no guarantees and some reports of people getting worse instead of better.

    Hi Melbassett,

I stumbled upon this site while googling how to relieve my sinus induced vertigo.

When you mentioned having air in your eustachian tube, I immediately thought of Ayurveda. I'm currently studying Ayurvedic Medicine, which is an ancient Indian healing modality. I have found it to bring answers to health issues for which western medicine can not even define.

Ayurveda teaches that optimal health can be achieved by maintaining balance in the body through proper diet and lifestyle. Proper is the key word and what might be proper for one individual may not be for another as we each have varying constitutions and imbalances.

You can do a bit of research yourself by finding a dosha test online and reading about the various qualities and balancing foods for the different doshas.

For instance, if you are also experiencing issues with achy joints, intestinal gas, and nervousness you may have what's called a VATA imbalance. What's more, if your eating healthy stuff like salads, raw vegetables, and dried nuts/fruits, you could be aggravating your imbalance.

I'm pretty sure my troubles were aggravated by my over indulgence of ice cream the last few days since cold foods and dairy can create more mucous in the body and slow down fluid movement.

I would suggest finding an experienced Ayurvedic doctor to give you a detailed evaluation of your imbalance. The problem may not even be in your eustachian tubes!

I'm going to spice things up today in my diet and see if that gets my tubes to unclog! Hope you feel better soon!

      Michael,

If you're up for reading, there are some great websites for understanding your dosha (constitution). There are basically 3 different doshas - called Pitta, Vata, Kapha - and we all have some of all 3 but most people are more prominent in one or two.

Wow- thank you so very much for your wonderful insight! I’m going to look into finding an Ayurvedic doctor. A close family friend had a similar suggestion. Like Michael11955, i am interested to learn more about the dosha test.

      Thank you again!!

I started having Eustachian tube dysfunction last year and  i’ve found that changing my diet has helped a lot.  I’ve avoided dairy and I noticed  a difference and I drink a lot of water. My ears are still not  100% but there better then what they were.

      AMEN!!!!!!! AMEN!!! ABSOLUTELY!!!

I can totally relate to that myself....I have suffered with unbearable eustachian tube dysfunction and extreme tinnitus for over 10 months, crying out to Jesus days and night to heal me because there was nothing the three doctors could do to help me. But just recently it has been been abating, easing up, and I can go several days without any symptoms, the answer is coming and I KNOW IT IS AN ANSWER TO MY PRAYERS! Praise God!

Keep praying, seek Jesus with all your heart, trust Him and wait....no matter how long it takes. He does hear...He knows your suffering and He will answer your prayers.

      God bless you all!

Wonderful for you Peter and I too am a Christian.  However if you only get a few days

relief, ten it starts up again as mine does, you have a problem.

I've prayed hard too, but still suffering ETD after thirty years.  If we have a problem that

is causing Eustachian Tube Dysfunction we have to use the appropriate medication to

at least get some sort of relief from this awful condition.

My ears were badly blocked yesterday, so I used my Flixonase Nasule drops and they

cleared within half an hour....they will be good now for another 4 days, then I'll have to

use them again.  I also take a f=daily antihistamine, as I know that Sinus and allergies

      cause my ETD.

      Kind regards

      Anne

Keep praying and NEVER EVER give up! God answers prayer, but sometimes we just have to WAIT on the answer...no matter how long it may the. He is developing patience and perseverance. All the medications I've taken hasn't helped at all....but God alone is bringing me healing! Use your meds...but put your FAITH in Christ??😊

one of the approaches that people have written about online (and if one looks, there are better instructions online than what I am writing here) is using a neti pot with warm water (about a cup filled) with about 10-15 drops of nasal spray (with phenophryline as the active ingredient, available at a pharmacy) and then pouring that through one nostril but instead of allowing it to pass through the other nostril for an extended period, closing up the nostril with your finger so that the water pours into your throat and leaning backwards and filling the throat with that water (but using one's tongue to put pressure on the top of the throat and to ensure that the water does not pour down one's throat) and then closing both nostrils with your hand and then leaning to the left for 5-10 seconds, to the right for 5-10 seconds, back for 5-10 seconds, and forward for 5-10 seconds (or however long one can wait - it is hard to wait that long without a breath!)  and then ultimately allowing the water to flow out of your nostrils and blowing your nose several times and the valvalva maneuver. if this is not clear, i suggest you go online and search for a better explanation/instruction for performing this but the idea is that the water (with phenophryline anti-inflammation nasal drops) goes into your sinuses and ears (when you lean to the left and right) and it allows the ears to unclog. i hope that this is helpful.

This is a very dangerous procedure and can potentially cause much more serious problems! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS!!! You can end up with servere infection of the inner ear as water can be trapped and you might even need a myringotomy.

I REPEAT...THIS IS DANGEROUS...DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS!

Ask any otolaryngologist or doctor and they will tell you. You can apply drops into the nose and sinuses and tilt your head to the side for a few minutes....that is safe, but DO NOT try to get water inside the Eustachian tube. You are risking severe problems that are much worse than a blocked Eustachian tube! If you read online you can see posts of several people who had very bad effects and regret ever doing this procedure.

IF YOU DO YOU DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!

i would suggest that for a better explanation, you google "clogged ears: unclog your ears with a neti pot" and click on the first link

Hello Jess, sadly these pots don't work....all they do is help prevent pollen and anything else that may cause allergies.  I've been using a Nasal Rinse, which is easier than the Neti-pot, it does clear some mucus down, that can get into our Eustachian tubes, but it doesn't unblock ears.  I've been a sufferer for so many years and there is nothing out there that will cure completely ETD.  Fortunately, I live in England where a certain Nasal Drops have helped me to get relief for approx 5/6 days before they block up again.  Mine is due to sinusitis and allergies.

Anne, have you tried using the neti pot as described in the first link that pops up when you google "clogged ears: unclog your ears with a neti pot"? It describes an approach that isn’t typically how you would use a neti pot with the purpose of unblocking ears? Thanks.

100% agree with what you've said Pete.  I sometimes find after using the Nasal Rinse my ears block worse, so obviously water has manged to seep in somewhere.
