Diabetic neuropathy

I'm 22 and I've been a diabetic for 5 or 6 years now, a good portion of it I didn't take care of my self I've just now gotten to where I'm taking appropriate amount of insulin and Lantus, however sometimes my sugar is still a little high, I have neuropathy in my feet and some pain in my calves, I started on gabopendin but the pain was unbearable still, so they have me on lyrica which I've heard bad things about, but I haven't been able to fall asleep at all for the last couple of nights, I just lay there sometimes in pain or just a little discomfort, I heard some good things about milk thistle so I bought some, I haven't tried it yet because I'm worried it'll stop the lyrica from taking away some of the pain I'm in. I could really use some help and some support. I've been really depressed lately and I don't know if it's a side effect from the meds or because the pain is so bad that I just want to die. Or maybe it could be the lack of sleep or rest that's just making me emotionally and physically exhausted. Please help me.

I’m not in your shoes so I cannot make any suggestions or comments to help you at this time but I just wanted to share a few thoughts of my own that I have now managed and put in a place where they need to be for now in my life.
I share one thing with you.... pain.
I experience pain and I wish it away every day.
I still question what it is, experiment with different meds. / pain assisting classes and, generally, look for alternative ways of managing the pain.
Years of dealing with pain make you stronger from within. If you can experience a little time without pain then logically the pain can be controlled but it’s up to us to find a solution. An example of this in my life is that when I am busy teaching, I am not in pain ! It’s almost as if the mental controls the physical at this time.
I’m sorry to say I am not a Doctor so am unable to give you any answers but then neither has my GP or Specialist given me any answers !!! There are some things in life we may not find answers to but that doesn’t mean we cannot improve our own situation. Keep asking questions, looking for new ideas and techniques. You will find a way forward in time. I have always believed there is someone out there somewhere who has the answers. If your gut instinct tells you something, then go with it. So, if you have an overwhelming feeling that things are not right, go visit your Dr. and ask for support. My Dr. always reminds me that he is always there for me if I need to talk and that is reassuring.
By the way, this website is a fantastic support. Keep in touch on here and all the best to you.

Hello Brandon,
Decent chance you heard about milk thistle from my thread or someone who may have read it. Sounds like you are type 1?
I am not a doctor, but type 1 now for over 38 years and still kicking strong, with my only major complication with the neuropathy in my feet and after many decades it has reached my hands as well. I found I actually have 4 forms (which there are many, many forms).
This type of neuropathy is typically a slow mover, but since you let your sugars go, it sounds like it is hitting you fast and hard.
I can not over emphesize how important your blood sugar control is. Only about 5% of diabetics are type 1. That is because it can get fatal very fast and the complications can set in very fast as well if you do not take care of things.
So first and foremost, get in control, see your doctors often and get on the right track and stay there.
Rread my post regarding the milk thistle and it has all the details. In short, it can help a lot. I can not promise anything, but I am now over 1 year TOTALLY PAIN FREE from my foot pains. My mother has no more tingling (hers is from age, 78), my pain management doctor's husband is now on it and it is woring great, so she is recommending it to her patients, my primary is recommending it to her patience as well. Two other people with type 2 have been using it with great results. So it can work, without the bad things from the meds like Lyrica. I am actually thankful for the Lyrica, because without that side effects nightmare from hell, I would never have found the milk thistle.
Hope this helps and again, see your doctors often and get yourself in control. Without that you're going to face some very nasty complications and you do not want to go there.
Best Wishes
