Diagnosed today

I had an endoscopy today and was told I have a hiatal hernia, Barrett's esophagus, and acid reflux. I am new to the group and wonder what I can expect. The doctor didn't say much about change of diet or foods to avoid. I haven't had a coffee or any caffeinated beverages in several months now. I would love to have a latte. Would that be ok? I'm on pantoprozole 40 mg. Any advise would be appreciated.

    hi Kim

I too have had your symptoms for several years now….Yes a latte would be fine….I drink coffee all the time…I try and avoid acidic stuff loike oranges at night and have tried to cut down on the fatty foods….You will get to know the foods that aggravate your symptoms….Chocolate in the evening is another thing I avoid and red wine…..everyone is different….Good luck...

Thank you Dave. I am very worried and now I sleep almost completely sitting up. I don't want the acid in my esophagus making things worse. What a scary thing that sometimes our bodies fight against us instead of for us.

I did have a decaffeinated latte this morning. It tasted amazing. I don't know about all of the milk in it. I guess I will see later. I also drank a little glass of chocolate milk tonight and I'm guessing I will regret that.

When you have Barrett’s esphogus and acid reflux it is a slippery slope. I found all caffeinated drinks, chocolate, spicy foods, sauces, gravies, fried foods especially hard of acid build up. I was on PPI for 25 Years and then they stopped working. You want to try to avoid any flair ups. Make sure you are followed by a good gastrointestinal doctor and get endoscopies at least every 3 Years. If systems get worse tell your doctor right away. Your doctor or on line can give you a diet to follow. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any more questions.

Thank you. I didn't realize sauces and gravies would cause problems. I should have figured that. I eat salad quite a bit so I'm guessing dressing isn't very good for that either. What about fruit yogurt? And bananas? I have been eating both of those almost daily. I also have a little bit of a fatty liver. I worry about so many things. I don't want to have more issues.

Hi Kim, I found cooked vegetables digested better, low fat dressing is okay. Low fat dairy and bananas are good. You will have restrictions but if you follow them it will be better for your future health.

I am having an endoscopy in a couple of days. The last one was in 2009 when when I was diagnosed with a Acid reflux, hiatus hernia and inflammation of the esphogus.  I had no follow up so dreading both the scope and results as have had an episode of internal bleeding two weeks ago.

Will  be interested to heard how others cope with diet and what is best and to be avoided food and drink wise.

The last two months I have avoided caffeine (including Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha Lattes), juice, carbonated beverages and even stopped drinking my favorite Diet Snapple Raspberry tea. I have completely avoided alcohol. I have drank nothing but water. I am going to ask for a diet that will help and from now on I'm not going to eat after 7:00 (I get off work at 6:00) and try not to drink anything after 8:00.

Having the combination you do be careful. Follow a low-fat diet. Avoid acidic, caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods. Eat bland if possible, small meals preferential 5 instead of 3 a day. Eat slow and not at nite.good luck

Poor you a lot to deal with. They say to avoid caffeine. But I have been okay with de- caf latte but I just have 2 a week. I avoid fizzy drinks, tomato’s, pastry, certain fruits because of the acid.  I have learnt over time which foods really upset me and which foods I can tolerate in small doses.
