Diagnosed with CIS

Hi all,

On Tuesday the neurologist diagnosed me with CIS. I have to have MRI done again and if any new lesions he will refer me to ms specialist. Just wondered if anyone else has been diagnosed CIS and how things have turned out for them?

Thanks

Helen

I was originally diagnosed CIS in 2013, but I was confirmed RRMS 4 months layer in 2014. Statistics say 5-10% of CIS cases stay as CIS, and they never have anything beyond that first attack.

    Hi,

I had an event just over 1 year ago.  Upper body tremors, extreme anxiety, lower body weakness with muscle pain, teeth chattering, cognitive impairment, twitching and tingling in my legs and upper back.  I had a brain MRI showing multiple small puncuate lesions in the subcortical region. Radialogist stated these are not consistent with MS.

Non of the doctors I saw including two neurologists, one being an MS specialist, said anything about me having a CIS.  One of the neurologists said this could be MS, but the MS Specialist said I did not have MS.

I was wondering if you could elaborate on the symptoms you experienced to cause you to see your primary/GP doctor?  Could you also elaborate on your MRI findings?  Did you have an MRI of your spine?  Did you have a spinal tap?

      Hi

My symptoms started in Feb this year with a pain under my left breast. After about 5 weeks of this I went to gp. He told me to book blood tests for 2 weeks time. By the time I went for bloods the pain had subsided but I'd started to become numb in the same area. Bloods came back fine. The numbness continued and spread from halfway round the front of my torso to halfway round my back ind down into my thigh. I decided to go back to the gp. He ordered more bloods. As well as numbness I was clumsy, fatigued and had pins and needles in hands and feet.

Bloods again all came back normal so gp ordered MRI of brain and spine and referred me to neurologist.

I don't know the details of the MRI but lesions were found in brain and spine.

In June I fell really ill and was diagnosed with vertigo. This lasted 3 weeks.

Neuro appt was this week when he did a number of neurological tests, discussed my symptoms and looked at MRI results. He then diagnosed CIS and asked to repeat the MRI. No lumbar puncture (spinal tap) yet, he might request one dependent on outcome of new scans.

      Hope that helps

      Thank you for your reply.

It sounds like you have a very good neurologist working with you.  That is one thing I have found to be invaluable.

Hopefully your symptoms will abate and this will be just a few isolated events.

I'm sure you know, but diet, excercise, and low stress are very important in these situations.

      I wish you the best.

I need your help guys. I just had an open brain MRI last mounth which showed several nonspesific tiny lessions in both of my frontal lobs.

The radiologist suggested different conditions beacuse he wasn't sure what are they.

So he suggested follow ups with more tests and imeges. But my General dr was not concern at all he told me it's nothing to worry about even normal people have them. But I pushed him to refer me to nerologyist to see what's going on. The nerologyist looked at my result and sat infront of me and asked me to push, pull, look up and down, left and right then asked me to walk back and forth to him. Then he put buzzing metal on my hands, knees and feet.

Then he sat back and told me that there must be coloration between body symptoms and imeges in order for him to diagnose MS.

In my case there were no coloration between my imeges and body symptoms. So he said as we age we get theses lessions and people with migraine gets it as well.

So I was left with many questions. How could or be normal to have lessions?

Dr Google says having lessions means MS.

Could this be CIS as well?

      Thank you

What symptoms made you present to your doctor?

Did you have a lumbar puncture or an MRI of your spine?

If you don't have "typical" ms lesions, a doctor will be very hesitant to diagnose ms without a lot of additional evidence.

There a quite a few websites that discuss the typical ms lesions.

Be careful of Dr. Google. It has the potential to send you in a tailspin.

      Hi Oddy

Thanks for your reply. I did not have spinal MRI or spinal tap I only had brsin MRI with at that result that I mentioned above.

I just saw two different nerologyistes and one optometrist all told me that they don't know why I have those nonspesific lesions and they also don't know what was the cause of them.

I left there office with all these unanswered questions

Here I am still confused not knowing why should I have this result?

What does it mean to have lessions?

Is it normal to have them and not having any problem in the future?

Can they go away or heal?

      Are they MS lessions?

Should I just forget about them and live my life like they are not there?

I truly don't know what to do. I got my self crazy of googling my result to see what does my result mean. But my findings are all scary and keep showing up MS and MS.

I could not get any answers from those doctors at all.

If you are having symptoms then yes your lesions could be significant and you will need to get some answers from your doctors. If you have no symptoms and depending on your age etc, white matter lesions can be insignificant and at least you know they are there and you can take measures to prevent more from occurring. This would be done by living a healthy lifestyle and avoiding any kind of infections. There is a lot of research that points to infections as a possible cause of MS.

But what kinds of infections does the researchers talk about? I have never smoked, I've never drank, I've never involved in any risky relationship. As long as I remeber I've tried to live and eat healthy. It's been years that I am buying organic and none GMO food. As far as I remeber the inflation that I may had were from flu, and the vaccines that I've got. Like TDAP one. So I don't know if all the people has lessions beacuse of tfe simple infractions they got during thier life time. If it was HIV or other kind of more siriouse infectious diseases that would be more acceptable. You see that' is why I am puzzeled. The only think that keeps me worrying its the anxiety. I've been dealing with it for years and I don't know if anxiry can cause brain lessons or not.
