Diagnosed with Silent Reflux, prescribed Nexium. Some questions...

Hi,

My ENT put a scope down my throat and diagnosed me with a "proabably new and not very severe" case of silent reflux. My symptoms are a slight burning in the throat and mucus coming up throughout the day. I was initially diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Not sure if that diagnosis even holds now and I have both conditions, or just the SLR.

My doctor prescribed Nexium 40mg 1 a day for 2 months, then see him again. I think he said take it 15 min. after breakfast, but the Nexium site says 30 min before meals. Can anyone guide me here on when to take it?

2. Anything to worry about with this medication? I'm researching now and seeing some comments about "beware of the reflux medications your dr. prescribes because they can do more harm than good." Does that apply here, or should I just follow doctor's orders?

Here is my view of this problem and why it's getting more common.  We live in an era of drugs.  Many new drugs to treat all of our problems.  Many children take prescribed drugs.  Doctors hand out drugs like they are candy.  But, when you look at the side effects of most drugs, almost all of them will mention nausea and vomiting, or stomach distress of some sort.  It may take years before the damage is done.  My poison was a 'simple' nasal spray.  It not only opened up my sinuses, but widened my esophagus, caused gastritis, and inflamed my small intestine.  After many nausea and vomiting attacks I figured out the connection and stopped the spray cold turkey and started getting better.

There are also other factors in modern life.  Hormones and antibiotics in our food supply.  These mess up our bacterial balance.  We can't get better until we find the poison in our lives and remove it.

I eat yogurt every morning just to try and rebalance my bacteria.  Bad bacteria makes gas and bloating and flem, good bacterial helps digestion and cleanse the mouth and esophagus.  A white tongue is indicating trouble.  The tounge should be pink and uncoated.  Bad tonsils need to be cleaned regularly.  They can leach bad bacteria down the throat.

Once I got my esophageal sphincter working properly, I was then able to work on my other issues.  I repaired my sphincter by drinking 10 oz of carbonated water twice a day and holding down the burp, forcing the sphincter to fuction.  Its my own idea but it works great.  It may be uncomfortable at first but that just shows that the sphincter is weak.  Eventually, after a month or two, it will hold down the pressure without any effort.

The sphincter is designed to stay pinched shut all the time, even when we sleep.  It is when they get lazy and weak that causes trouble.

Let me know if you have any questions on all of this.  I hope you get some benefit from my experience.

Fantastic that your exercise is still working really good and thanks for the update. One tiny thing. I too used to think the sphincter was always shut but it appears that it vents a few times each hour. I suppose that stands to reason or we would blow up but it does explain why some burp and some dont. Keep up the good work. Are you eating anything at all or keeping things very strict.

Not too many months ago I was on a pretty strict diet. No beef, no tomato sauce, no french fys or greasy food, no cold cereal.  But since I strengthened my esophageal sphincter I can eat whatever I want, even late at night.  I can burp if I need to.  It has changed my life.
