Diarrhea after gallbladder removal?

Posted , 77 users are following.

I had my gallbladder removed January 25th. Been ok... i didn't really eat the first 3 days. Now that I'm eating 'normally' I'm having some stomach issues still after eating, I get diarrhea with in minutes of finishing a meal, I'm always hungry after! I feel like my food goes right through me... it's depressing that I can't even go out to dinner with my family at a restaurant because I have to run to the bathroom after I eat. Forget about car rides! I have to stop a gas stations sometimes to relive myself. It's so embarrassing! Not to mention inconvenient! Someone help! Is anyone else experiencing this!

Hi,. I had my gallbladder removed on Feb of this year. I had the same problem. It's normal until your body heals. They will subside. Just give it time. Just watch the acidy foods and the fatty foods and the spicy foods. I don't have alot of the probs now. But some foods I still do. I know about the embarrassing part. I have had accidents too, the bloating and gas will subside too. When my stomache acts up and I am home. I drink a warm cup of tea to relax my stomache.

    Hi

Thank you. I have been off this site for a bit.  My gall bladder was removed 6 years ago so it seems it isnt going to get better.

I understand there are 10% of us that this is a life time problem for..however I saw a consultant last week who has now prescribed me with tablets called cholestagel in stead of the questrian powders that I have had,,which do work but I had not been taking everyday..only when I was away from home for a meal. I wonder if anyone else has tired this new medication?  I have only had it for a couple of days.

I will try to remember my new password to check in on tnis site??

    Cheers

    Ali

Yes I’m taking cholestagel and seems to be working well. My problems were usually in the morning and after lunch. But since taking the pills I’ve had sorta normal BM’s.

Let us know how it goes on the new med , I took questran for a few days and had lots of side effects it was bad for me wish they could come up with something without all the side effects there worse than the constant diarrea

So glad you stopped the Questran. My sister took it for chronic diarrhea, which she suffered with for years after having her gallbladder removed and it caused a major blockage in her lower bowel and she did not recover from this. Be very careful with it.

Try Metamucil! It really helps binding excess bile to solids and stops diarrea after gall bladder removal.

I've been using metamucil, and also calcium tablets , the questran and colistipal dont agree with me,some days are good some are bad and some are even worse, morning is the worst ,as soon as i wake up gas gas more gas then i go and go about 15 min later I go again this goes on for about 4 hours then I'm ok til I eat again im afraid to leave the house some days, mornings are defiantly out ,im open to any more suggestions ,things are better than they use to be, calcium seemed to be the only thing that helped , Imodium helps but to much constipates.

      Debbielynn,

Have you tried over the counter meds for your burping and reflux?  The symptoms you're describing indicate to me that the bile is dripping into your small intestine and backing up into your stomach through your duodenum each night.

Cholestyramine might work for you if you mix the sachet with 6 ounces of fruit juice and drink it nightly right before bed time.  It will absorb the excess bile. xx

Tried it and the side effects were terrible that's what caused the burping and really bad reflux and dry heaving I do meta and half a calcium tablet when I eat

Well, I hope they continue to work for you!  Best of luck! xx
