Diarrhea from laxative

Hi there, I have ibs and around 2 weeks ago I drank some Andrews salts, 2 strong doses for a laxative effect in the space of 4 hours. And ever since I've had really bad diarrhea, however as I've been working, I've been blocking it up using codeine tablets, so I've only been "letting it out" once a day before blocking it up again. It's still there so this weekend I decided to not block it up and let it out. And I've had some really bad and constant diarrhea all weekend. Is it possible this is still the after effects of the laxative from 2 weeks ago, or is that not really possible for a laxative to last that long?

Hey there, I am an IBS sufferer but im the "loose" way kinda girl rather than constipated lol to put it bluntly. Having laxatives can cause you to be loose for several days not two weeks but it is probably your bowel recovering over the codiene aswell as a flare up of your IBS. I take codiene more a less every other day just so i can live a normal life without crapping myself lol. Embarrassing i know but gotta see the funny side (afterwards), But then the days i am no longer taking the codiene for my ibs is so painful, i can even feel my bowel vibrating! and i also have several days of really bad loose stools and worse to what they normally are if you get me lol. Also look at what food you are having. I found dairy, too much fibre and anything with spice inside whether spicy or not it set me back and wasnt good. Hope this helps and you are ok soon :-) xx

I would not think it is the laxatives causing this after 2 weeks, it just sound like a flare up of your IBS, it might have just coincided with you taking the laxatives, but if you continue to have diaorrhea for another week then I would see your doctor.

Thanks to all for the response. Went to dr today and he sent me to the hospital. Spent 6 hours having a full check up, like an all in 1 mot. Got the all clear so Christ knows what's causing it. Hopefully it'll just clear up eventually.

That's good to know it wasnt anything serious, not an m.o.t lol. Take care xx

Thats good news that your MOT showed nothing amiss.  Most probably just a flare up of your IBS or even a stomach bug hopefully it will clear up real soon for you.  I had diarrhea for over 2 months, had loads tests and was told it was IBS but it kept on and I just knew it was something more than that so  in the end insisted on colonoscopy which showed no polyps or lumps etc bt he took biopsies of the colon and i was diagnosed with collagenous colitis also known as microscopic colitis as it can only be diagnosed by taking a biopsy of the colon and seeing it under a microscope!!  So trust your own feelings, you know your body and if you feel that something is wrong then insist on more tests.  Good luck and hope it clears up.

It turns out, all I needed was some Imodium. I can't believe it. I've been really ill for 2 weeks with it, but for some stupid reason I never thought of actually taking the actual cure for diarrhea!!

My problem is, that in the past, when I've taken Imodium for minor ibs symptoms, it's made me blocked up for days and weeks at a time, so I kinda pretended it didn't really exist. So thought I'd try some as a last resort, and it turns out, that with Imodium being a cure for diarhea, it cured my diarrhea. Weird that huh?
