Diarrhea in PMR

Posted , 3 users are following.

Ihave had violent diarrhea for about two weeks. Isaw my GP who was convinced itwas an infection but a sample has come back negative. All the drugs say they can cause constipation or diarrhea but I had been on Alundronic acid and Omeprazole for some weeks before this started.Has anyone else had this? It is adding to my disturbed sleep and fatigue and general sense of being unwell. Onthe bright side my weight has gone down! Wenjemima

Hi Wenjemima - I suffered badly like you when first prescribed Prednisolone and Lanaprozole by my GP which resulted in the latter being switched to Omnaprozole - I then developed a pain in my side. At my first appointment with the rheumatiologist I mentioned this and he told me in that case not to take any of them. I said I didn't want to get a burnt out stomach from the steroids to which he replied he had never seen a case of that yet! Fearing the consequences of long term Prednisolone I thought I'd try a daily live yoghurt before the steroids and so far 3+ years down the line all is well. I hope you, too, find a solution as it's certainly difficult to live with constant diarrhea! Do let us know how you get on.

Didn't suffer any gut problems in my first PMR episode but did second time round. After several complaints was sent for an \" in case\" ultrasound scan which showed gut fine but cyst on left kidney which we are \"watching\"I'm to have second scan soon (after first one 6 months ago but that's another story).

I, like Mrs. O swear by live yoghurt. I have a couple of BIG spoons before taking my Pred. then more with muesli and this seems to work fine for me; I don't even have to have coated pills. It's certainly worth a try. Best of luck.
