Diarrhea in the night- Ibs or stomach bug?

Hello- I went to sleep around 12 midnight and exactly an hour later at 1am I was awoken by the real urge to go the toilet. I didn't think it would be any other bowel movement but when getting to the toiley I had really really explosive uncontrollable diarrhea (sorry too much info) and it really scared me as I've never experienced it before. I literally had no control and it kept coming with a consistency of just water. I was on the toilet for about 40 minutes and took a immodium as it was so bad. I went back to bed and was really hot and was really shivering- normally when I have an IBS attack, I need to go to the toilet but its just loose stool, still with some form but this was just water and lots of it (sorry again). I had been out for a drink with a couple of friends and had some chips, a glass of rose and a malibu and coke- that's all. It's really scaring me- was this my IBS or was it some kind of stomach bug? My boyfriend had a stomach bug a couple of days ago but he was vomiting, is it possible I've caught the bug but I am just having diarrhea? sorry for all the detail, I'm just really worried sad Thanks, Maisie x

Hi Maisie, I wouldn't be too concerned. That sounds like food poisoning to me. Although I suffer with IBS too, I had my first incidence of actual food poisoning about 6 months ago. I am 34 years old and this was my first episode of this. I agree with you and it also cause me to faint for the first time in my life. It can be very frightening. But certainly due the extreme lack of control you experienced and also fever and chills, this is typical of food poisining. Bacteria can produce powerful toxins which cause these effects in your system. The only thing I would have done differently to you is I would not have taken Immodium- this is only so any remaining food, watery stool, bacteria and toxin might be cleared from your system as soon as possible. But anyway, its ok. This is likely to be just a 24 hour episode. You will be quite tired today so rest up, take fluids if you can (sparkling water is best) and by evening you'll be better.

Good idea sometimes meds taken or supplements on a empy stomach or sugary foods or drinks can cause what u describe. The minute it starts I take anti dihrea med to stop it immediately.
