Did anyone go to Rehab?

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi friends - One of the big decisions is whether to to go rehab or go home from the hospital. I live alone and there are 6 steps into my house and then 15 more to get into my apartment. I am worried about being home alone alot if I go straight home. What if I wake up in the night and have a problem getting out of bed or moving about.

What are your thoughts?

Hi there if I were you I would go to rehab as the first week home is the

worst as u are not confident in walking and having someone there for

assistance and assurance to do the simplest things I would say it is the best thing for you in your situation.I am fortunate to have my husband at

home but I have mentioned on here before my heart goes out to anyone

going home without someone there to help them as this is a big

operation but we'll worth it after your recovery .

so just you go to rehab do what they tell you regarding exercise pain

meds etc.and you will be suprised how you will feel after another weeks

recovery.Sit back and be pampered as well it all helps .

good luck for a speedy recovery☺

I'd highly recommend rehab. It makes all the difference in the world. They motivate you when at home, you don't have anyone to answer to. Steps are horrible... after 12 weeks, they still hurt and I won't go to my basement and do laundry because the steps are so steep. I guess my fear of falling is taking over in that case. With all the PT,  almost feel I'd be OK if I fell, the muscles are feeling so strong. I know it's not funny, but when I got home, and I'm alone as well. I made my nest on the sofa, a pillow where the two cushions meet, and laid there. On the first day or so, I can't remember. It took me 20 solid minutes to get up off my sofa. I was upside down, head on the floor, feet in air, sideways, rear end in the air, rolling on my side.. I just could not twist around to get my legs both on the floor and hold on to anything. Now, I can look back and see it as comical. I kept my walker right by me after I learned that lesson. I see no problem moving around in bed. I was told I could sleep in any position, even on the incision. Keep the walker with you and use it. Go sideways into the bathroom, not directly in. Hope you got a raised toilet seat!! I don't know if that helped with your decision but I only had 4 steps into my house. Single floor, no upstairs. If it's not inconvenient and you don't have a pet at home, etc.. I'd take the rehab. At first, things are pretty tough, physically and emotionally. It would be good that you'll have that support system.

I stayed with my brother and his family for 2 weeks since I also live alone.

I don't know how I would've done it had I not because the first few weeks were a little rough.

If you don't have somebody to stay with you for at least 2 weeks, then I would recommend going to Rehab.

When I went home I still had friends come to clean out my litter boxes and take my garbage down to the can but other than that I was fine.

It gets very tiring at times so don't overdo it!

    Good luck to you!

I would recommend rehab. Stairs aside, the first week can be overwhelming. Moreso if you are on your own, as the simplist things can prove either frustrating or just 'too much effort'. We all need encouragement and if you have the choice...

    Hi Cindy,

    I am 68, had 2THR's and live alone -

I would recommend rehab eventhough I did not - I went home, had home health nurse come to the house for 2 weeks -

it is doable, but I agree, let yourself be pampered and taken care of - getting in and out of bed you will be able to do before you are discharged from hospital -

again, it is all doable -

but to not to have to worry about cooking meals, knowing that you can always call when necessary, PT coming to you, encouragement etc is really helping with the healing process -

so go for it , girl

big warm hug and pleasecome back here anytime you have a question or concern
