Did I screw up my barrium swallow?

Hello,
I have been on Dexilant for 4 months now because my doctor suspected I have GERD because I’ve been getting very bad chest pain and regeneration of food right after I eat.
2 weeks ago I had a barrium swallow and they only found a small amount of reflux. My question is should I have stopped taking the PPI to get a more accurate diagnosis?
Because they only found minimal reflux I stopped taking the dexilant because of long term risk factors, but now I’m having horrible chest pain and esophagus spasms worse then before..
Any guidance would be very helpful.

Hi Tim, did they ask you not to take your ppi before the test ? i know they do when your having an endoscopy, if I were you I would carry on taking your ppi you've only been taking it for a short time, I've been taking 40mg of omeprazol since 2005 with no problems, however because I've heard of the long term effects it can have I'm making an appointment to see my gastro, to see what he thinks first, what I do know is you should never stop taking your meds straight away you need to wean yourself off them slowly and speak to your gp there are other meds you could take....hope it helps and you feel better soon x

Research sleep apnea. The panic breathes every couple of minutes help transport the reflux up much further into the mouth. Makes the reflux unmanageable. Perhaps you need to be treated for sleep apnea to control your reflux.
Do you get tired during the day?
SA can happen at any age bu common above 55.
80% of people who have it have no idea that they are affected.
I had a barrium meal and only lower reflux. But I was getting it into my sinuses etc. Blood blisters in my mouth.
The doc gave up on me saying that I must be drinking alcohol each night which I was not.
Five years of agony later I found a doc who knew what it was.
Now easily managed after being treated for SA. Still take the ppi's also.
Docs, specialists know nothing. It is up to you to make it happen.
