Diet Coke

Hi All, I have had LS since my early 20's, I'm now in my early 40's. It seems, with me, to have some connection with artificial sweeteners. I have recently cut out Diet Coke from my diet and my symptoms have disappeared and are staying away, around a year now. Whenever I do have an occasional Diet Coke I feel the itching starting again.

This may not be connected at all but I just wanted to share as it might be the same for others ?

Wow, it's ironic reading this. I have had LS for the past few years. I have noticed upon eating certain foods I will have an outbreak and I am still learning what foods can cause an outbreak to happen. I had not had a episode in the last 6 months because I started using the Clobestol Ointment which has drastically changed the apperance of my bits, normal coloring coming back, no itching and no outbreaks. I have never been a pop, coffee, tea or caffinated drink type of person however 2 days ago I tried a diet Snapple with artificial sweetner and instantly within a couple hours of drinking it I developed some itching and a fissure. I don't find this coincidental because I am pretty aware of the slightest changes in my body. I would definitley say there is a connection. Needless to say that was the first and last time I drink anything of that sort. Hope you feel better soon!

That's really interesting you say that, My current flare has lasted the longest I've ever had and in that time I've started using sweetners. Might stop using it and see. Xx

Hello Aede,  I have recently read about this in my research as well...and I believe there may be a connection. I've been a heavy Diet Coke drinker and found when I stopped it and also cleaned up my diet and added some supplements that my fibromyaglia disappeared.  I've kept that away...but started drinking the sodas again and then develped the OLP and LS.  I've cut down immensely...but need to go cold turkey and just leave it alone...it is VERY bad for you. Tomorrow is a new day...a day without artificial sweeteners! Thanks for the knock on the head...smile...I needed that!

All sugar, including artificial sweeteners are a no-no with me.  You're not immagining things.  Artificial food is the same - all these things that never seem to spoil in cnispery packaging.

This is so true and one source of sugar that people often over look is alcohol. This will cause a flare up faster than sweets or artificial sugars.

I am so glad  you started his thread.  I don't drink any diet drinks or even reg. coke, etc., but I am glad to know I am doing at least one thing right!  Thank you for reinforcing the idea that some foods really, really are bad for this condition.  My husband drinks at least two 2-liter diet Dr. Peppers every single day.  Actually, he probably drinks more than that, as I don't see him at work all day...he is very strong and can work hard, so he thinks he is fine, but I worry about him all the time.  I am convinced that all that artificial crap is going to just kill him one day, and I don't want that to happen.  But he just won't believe anything bad about his diet pop habit is no big deal.  I bet if he got symptoms of LS-type troubles, he would stop!

........sorry about my screwy sentence at the end....he does not believe his diet pop habit is bad...that it is no big deal.

that's what I meant to say.

I used to write long term care insurance and life insurance and in doing so worked with people with health issues, medical terms...online health resources and underwriters.  One thing that really stood out (and sorry that this is a bit gross) was that our bodies do not decay as they did before we started adding all the preservatives to our foods. Another one that stood out was that when a young male dies violently they usually have to do an autopsy. During autopsy they are finding 22-25 year old young males with the arteries of an 80 year old. So yes, the old adage that says we are what we eat does apply. 11 years ago I totally gave up all artificial sweeteners, but then about 6 years ago started up again and my health issues started cropping up. I've slowed way down in the last few months but have been having the occasional Diet drink...but as of tomorrow will be giving all up for good. If there is the slightest chance there is a relationship between OLP and LS...it's worth it!
