Diet for LS

Posted , 7 users are following.

I have had to return to these forums after a flare up of LS. I note that many of you advocate dietary changes for relief from symptoms. Does anyone have advice on what to avoid, please? I have a pretty good diet already, including lots of fruit and veg, but wonder if the occasional chocolate indulgence may have caused the flare up?

jeannie, medical doctors seem to have no dietary advice for us. No advice really other than to use steroids to control LS. However, there is a practice called Functional Medicine that treats issues from the inside out. Don't know if you are in the US, but I will PM a link to you on how to find a FM practitioner near you if you are in the US. If I put the link in this message for anyone else interested then the post will be blocked unfortunately. Just be prepared for the cost. I contacted one and he charges $795 for the 1st appointment and does not accept insurance. That is before any testing. It may be possible to find people who are more reasonable. Some are MDs and some are not.

Folks, although I did not include a link my post has been blocked. Don't know what to say about that. Just trying to mention there are people we can try to see who treat from the inside out.

    HI there Jeanniej,

I now the feeling - I too just had a flare up week after being comfortable for some time. I tried to think of what thing caused it... and once I got to checking things using my pendulum dowsing (which i highly recommend everyone learn to manage this LS), I realized my flare was not really caused by any one thing.

For me, it came down to a couple interacting events. I had run out of most of my supplements last month and couldn't replace them until today; the most important one is vitamin D3. I also have been "burning the candle at both ends" - ie. not enough sleep.... creative output - but not good for LS to have less than 8 ours sleep on a regular basis.

Jeannie, it's been a year now, and I still can't go back to using regular sugar. EVERYONe here will tell you that sugar is the worst for LS. Some will say they can't do Wheat, but I haven't found this to be true for me. We've all been learning that most of us have different triggers, so just keep a mental note or written record if you have too.

FOr what it's worth, if it interests you, I asked permission (of your higher self) and asked through pendulum dowsing testing whether your bit of chocolate is a problem for you. I got a no, I also asked about the amount of fruit you eat - also a no, not a problem. I asked if there was too much stress(of any kind) and got a yes. I didn't ask any further. Hope this is helpful. If you are like me and don't get enough sleep - I have found that about 20 mg of melatonin will knock me out if i take it early enough haha to make me go to sleep! cheers, Nancy

hello- ive found that pure white sugar or sugary products are really the worst. so if you have really good quality dark chocolate, a little bit once in a while is ok, but definitley not milk chocolate or something that has a low content of real cocoa. why? because of sugar. .look for 85% or more organic cocoa. i actually developed a taste for 100% which is really bitter and not sweet. its also good as a hot chocolate, then i use a tiny bit of real molasses for sweetener or you can use a tiny bit of coconut sugar instead of white sugar. all in hot water with cinnamon powder. conventional dairy makes it worse too and if you can avoid gluten that helps.

Hi again, Jeannie - I've found for myself that I can enjoy 70% dark chocolate just fine. grin - Lynn is a true ascetic!

I also read some months ago that Xylitol (made from birch trees) does not cause the same problems as white sugar so I've been using that in my morning oatmeal fine too. I only recently learned about coconut sugar that Lynn mentioned so I'm gonna check that out at my health food Coop soon too. Let us know how you are getting on...

I had been vegetarian for around 6 years. My chinese doctor told me to try and incorperate meat back into my diet so far i've only been eating locally sourced butchers meat. She told me to avoid ALL seafood as it isnt good for skin conditions. She also said to cut out chocolate and alcohol but i havent been great at that part so far. However generally my skin has definitley improved. I personally dont think having a bit of chocolate would cause you to break out but im no expert. Hope this helps xx

Good grief! Hadn't heard that about fish. Thought that was supposed to be the healthy alternative to meat. This is why I want to get to (preferably) an MD who practices Functional Medicine. They can order tests that supposedly narrow down what you react to and what you lack re supplements. I don't think any of us can figure this out on our own.

I eat chocolate; only the darkest I can find and not a lot of it. Would hate to have to live without a glass of wine now & then with dinner. I read a book on auto immune disease by a man who claims to have cured himself (he's on you tube and certainly looks healthy!). Of course he is an MIT graduate and a chemist so he can understand scientific studies that would mean nothing most of us. He says raw organic vegetables are the best choice. I don't find raw food satisfying at all. Prefer foods cooked and warm. Am trying to increase tofu for the estrogen factor, but tofu is not well tolerated by everyone. He's also opposed to gluten. Am trying to limit it, but I have never been able to stick to GF. I did make cookies for myself last night though! Very simple with ripe bananas, quick oats, some peanut butter & raisins.

Beverly, have you had email contact with the EMIS Moderator, or at least tried using the Report flag icon - I think you deserve an explanation to some of your messages being constantly blocked .... ?

I think I have a Moderator email address if you would like me to PM that to you ....

Thanks, but I have posted messages to him directly so others on here can see. I think things are best when open to everyone. When my blocked messages finally come through it's obvious there was absolutely no reason for them to be blocked to begin with.

When I have had problems using the site I have had to ask for assistance many times via "contact" "reply" or by openly posting for assistance. Just sayin'. As the whole purpose of the site is to share what could be helpful info with others with health issues I find it more than ironic that it is so difficult to discuss anything remotely new.

I'm going to be daring and post some info re a specific hospital name for people in the US who may be interested in dietary info . I am in FL at the moment where the Cleveland Clinic has taken over the local hospital. I contacted them yesterday to ask if they have any FM doctors practicing on site. Unfortunately not at any of their FL locations; Ohio is the only one of their hospitals that does.

Not sure if my post re PBS broadcasting a show by a FM Dr. from Ohio got through. It was general dietary advice, not specific to AI disease. One new bit of info I got from it was he feels the only acceptable carbs are black rice, quinoa and buckwheat. For a person like myself who just can't handle not eating some kind of carb it's good to know.

Does anyone who makes their own GF bread use a bread machine? I see them in thrift shops all the time. Any recommended brands? If so can you please PM me so it doesn't get blocked? Thanks.
