difference between ovestin and estrace ?

Back again. After months of dealing with constant horrible burning I can say most days I'm at about a 75% improvement. I've found doctors to be not worth much and at this point seem to be doing my own prescribing. I'm doing lots of research and this site helps more than anything. I just want to be pain free again. The problem is now that I'm down to twice a week with the estrace cream I seem to be having problems with it. Last week I was great almost normal but immediately after I used the estrace I was laying in bed and started having some burning and pain. I use the estace on Tuesday and Friday nights. SO now it's calmed down again but I use it tomorrow night and I'm dreading it. I've read here ovestin is weaker and maybe better tolerated? Have any of you used both at different times? Did one or the other work better?

I suggested to my doctor I only use one gram instead of two but that really has not helped. I did not have this increased burning in the beginning after insertion. I'm feeling a little frustrated.

Hi I haven't used both of these creams just Ovestin but I have found I need to adjust the dosage to suit me. It does feel like there is still some fluctuation in what my body needs. After a year on Vaginally which wasn't strong enough for me I was sent to a Specialist at my request as I was so fed up with all the discomfort and as you say just wanted to feel normal again. I initially was using 1g of Ovestin divided over 2 nights per week but found it wasn't quite enough as I'm under a Specialist it was adjusted to 3 nights. I didn't get any irritation from it thankfully but I found if I missed the odd dose I didn't necessarily need the 3rd one. So now I just add it when I can feel the pulling/pinching of the skin feeling I get just before I start to tear. This seems to quickly balance things and I can go back to the twice a week pretty quickly. I would trial cutting the dose if you feel it's too much and monitor how you feel. Maybe on the 2nd night just put a small amount on your finger for the outer lips. I don't think Dr's understand this particular type of pain were experiencing. Not being able to even get any respite wears you down eventually and not being able to walk, sit, exercise, have sex comfortably if at all is debilitating.

I hope someone comes along who can answer your question about a comparison.

NO doctors don't understand the pain that's for sure. And I can't even think about having sex, my poor husband, it is just not even a choice. It's depressing to think this is forever. I've had so many health problems this year

    Hi donna18720,

It's good to make contact with someone else who has constant burning, I was beginning to think I was the only one who has this awful 24/7 vaginal burning.

I'm sorry I can't answer your questions regarding ovestin and estrace as I won't use HRT remedies as my mum had breast cancer following HRT so I won't take the risk.

I'm interested to know if you've tried anything non-hormonal which has given you some relief, like you I've been doing my own research and have so far tried vitamin e capsules as a pessary (but no relief after 10 days use) and I'm not trying YES VM gel, only two days in but so far no relief sad

I've got a Salcura Topida spray on the way so I'm hoping that will help. This constant burning is making me so miserable, as I'm sure you can well relate.

Poor you.  You have my sympathies.  After 6 months on Vagifem twice a week I thought I was fixed so stopped using all the other pessaries and creams then wallop it came back with a vengence.  I had to up the Vagifem to three times a week and be constantly moisturising day and night.  It taught me a lesson that there is no cure for this and that after a while things dont work as well as they did..

It is a horrible thought to think this is for life and have to constantly be thinking and treating your vagina and the resultant mess.

I also started to get very dry eyes which presume is just another drying up process that is linked so now as soon as my eyes start to feel dry I up the Vagifem and all the moisturisers.  Long term who can say what this is doing but I cannot stand the pain or the smell. I really dont know how the previous generation coped and wish someone would say what that used to do.  It can't be a new condition.

Hello Linda, I'm sorry you've had a hard time. This condition is hellish. I'm at my wit's end. I've had VA since October and the constant burning, inside and outside is just awful. I live in India where its very difficult to find local estrogen. The only thing available was Premarin vaginal cream, which I did use and it helped but I started spotting and was keen to get off it as its a synthetic, not bio-identical estrogen. I have finally managed to get a supply of Vagifem from abroad. Its only been 4 days, and I understand I must be patient, but there is no change.

Did I understand you correctly, you find other creams/ pessaries helpful together with the vagifem?

      Grateful for any advice

It will take 3 weeks or so to see a difference. Can you get pain meds like Norco? That is the only thing that worked for me

What is Norco Donna? Could you write the pharmaceutical or trade name? And when did you take it and how long for? Many thanks

it is hydrococone-acetaminophen 5-325  I took 1/4 tablet every six or so hours for about six weeks than as the estridol stared to work I gradually stopped.

Hi .. First may I say I am so suprized that there are so few forums out there with lots of women searching for help. I agree it's just so embarrassing talking about this to your doctor. I have suffered with AV dry eyes, dry skin for around 2 years now. I've tried all the over the counter creams which were either so messy or gave me a burning pain. I gave in and went to my doctor who sent me for a scan and was given the choice of either a cervical ring implant which is removed after a while or Estriol vaginal cream which I was to use once a night for one week then one syringe full twice per week afterwards.

i tried using this around two months ago and didn't get past 4 days before I couldn't stand the swelling and burning pain inside. I have just gave it another go and stopped at day five...same thing...I not only feel sore but they pressure from the swelling is stopping me from sleeping..feels like I need a wee all the time..

sorry this was so long...BTW I'm post meno mid 50's

I didn't have any swelling from the Estrace but it has caused irritation at times. I wouldn't dare stop using it though because I am nothing like I was.

I think I'll enquire about Estrace at my next doctors appointment. I'm kind of

concerned that if I tell the doctor that the Estriol creme is burning that he'll take that from me and tell me to use the usual over the counter remedies which, I think I've gone through them all with no relief. I just real sick at the thought of explaining everything to him again..maybe I should find a different

      GP.

i have been looking up DHEA today, has anyone tried taking it as a hormone supplement?

Never heard of that. I wouldn't worry about him doing that, it may just be like my Estrace and we adjusted the dose down.
