Different Lens Satisfaction for Men and Women

Posted , 5 users are following.

My eye doctor commented that, in his experience, men are happier with Vivity than women because men are not as concerned with near vision and don't want halos or glare and women want near vision to apply cosmetics without using glasses and women can tolerate PanOptix's halos better than men and drive less at night. Any opinions?

The research I have seen suggests that Type A, perfectionist personalities are least likely to tolerate the optical issues of a multifocal IOL, while an easy going Type B may be more tolerant. Not sure if Type A or B is linked to male or female gender. I think I have seen some of each.

I think it's reasonable that could be the case. I think gender could play into it as hobbies and activities can be different.

Women also want near vision so they can read, which we do much more than men. But I think that Ron's point about different personalities is much more important, and that a lot depends on what your specific work and leisure activities are.

I just looked up some statistics, and while it's true that women drive less at night than men, it's also true that women limit themselves from doing so more than men. One article I read said "A higher percentage of men than women continue to drive at night with poor vision....Of the total sample, 91% of men and 77% of women were current drivers. The mean age of the drivers was 73.3 years (range, 58-96 years). Among current drivers, women had slightly better vision function than men on most measures (low-contrast acuity, contrast sensitivity, low-contrast acuity in glare, low-contrast, low-luminance acuity, and glare recovery) but were twice as likely as men to restrict their driving to daytime."

I agree that lifestyle and personality definitely contribute to levels of cataract surgery satisfaction and that may be true of all things in like.

I just got Vivity. My near vision is great. I wasn't expecting that. My distance vision is blurry. I wasn't expecting that either. I wear makeup but still chose Vivity because I wanted distant and intermediate vision. So, I don't agree with your doctor at all. Hoping my distant vision clears more.
