Difficult 4th week post op.

Hi All,

I had my hip op on 22nd May. For the first 3 weeks I seemed to progress pretty well - increased my walking, throwing one crutch away, managing to cook again etc. But I don't feel as if I've overdone anything!

But this last week I've felt more tired, weepy and havent felt my usual enthusiastic self. Yesterday I had a pretty strenuous physio session and I was given the all-clear. And I can finally sleep on my sides!

Just really wanted to know if anyone else 'hits a wall' as part of their recovery? And if you did, did you rest more or push on with the walking and excersizing?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Anna

Funny you should say that, I know I have had other things going on too but I too feel so weepy seem to have aches and pains where I didn't have any. I am trying to keep up with the excersises but I have only been doing 2 walks instead of my usual 3. I am only 1 day in front of you too.smile How did your physio go? even after a week I can't do the standing on my bad leg and swinging my other one properly, but I keep trying smile Keep smiling Love Gill xx

      Hi Gill

i hope you don't mind me asking, the exercise you talk about standing on operated leg and swinging good leg.  Is that swinging backwards and forwards or side to side and do you hold on to anything whilst doing it?

My post op information has been shocking.  I was only given 3 standing exercises to do and at 7 weeks post op feel I should be doing more than just those and walking.  I'm only 46 and feel I need to be doing more.

      Thanks

These are copied from the sheet I was given at physio I also find the kitchen worktop the best thing to hold on to.

1:- Stand straight and hold on to the worktop. Slowly swing bad leg forwards and backwards as far as possible 10 times.

2:- Stand straight and hold on to worktop. Lift your leg sideways and bring it back keeping your trunk straight throughout the excercise. Do this 10 times then repeat with other leg.

3:- Stand in front of a chair or worktop holding on with both hands. Slowly crouch keeping your back straight and heels on the floor just a short distance. repeat 10 times.

Do all excercises 3 times a day.

Hope this helps Paula, Have fun Love Gill xx

      Hi Gill,

I'm not at all surprised that you're feeling weepy. You've had a shock this last week and there are bound to be repercussions.

But I hope you are soon back to where you were with your 3 walks a day.

Physio was pretty tiring and I was given new exercises to do and told to try to rely less on my remaining crutch. So hard though - but, hey, its only pain! Apparently a PT will be dropping in to see me in 2 weeks time. But at least I am allowed to sleep on my sides again, but I fear my sleep pattern has gone to pot.

I've had my morning walk and I'm expecting a visit from my

friend this morning, so maybe that will cheer me up!

      Chin up! You take care.

      Hi Paula,

One of the new exercises I was given yesterday was called ',the bridge'. You lie flat on the bed, bring your feet up towards your bottom and then press your hips up - forming a bridge I guess!

      Hi Paula

i was given an A4 sheet of exercise to do at home, but I saw on here recently that someone had recommended an app called 'Pocket Physio' so I downloaded it last night , and it's brilliant! It's provided by CareUK , who carry out hip surgery on behalf of the NHS.....if you are able to get it, I can really recommend it........I think at 46 you are probably capable of much more, unless there is a good medical or surgical reason why not, of coursebiggrin anyway, worth a go, I think

      hope this helps,

      best wishes,

Barbara (week 5 post op) and doing great!

      Hi Barbara,

I downloaded that app. It's so helpful and shows the two new exercises that I was given by the physio last week. And its free!

      Thanks for the tip,-off!

You're very welcome Anna! I think I'll show the app to my physio when I go in a month ...I think they should tell everybody about it....it's as good as having a physio in the room with you smile

best wishes for your speedy recovery,

Hello Anna I am now 14 weeks and did have the weepy days up until about 8 weeks. They are now a thing of the past. Still get various aches from day to day. However today I can touch my toes with knees straight. Only noticed this when moisturising lower legs this morning. Think the flexibility creeps up unexpectedly

Hang on in there it is early days

You're so right! I can dry my thighs and almost down to my ankles now! I guess we improve with time as the body gets stronger - hopefully!

Hi Anna. I'm only 5 days post op and so far so good. I was home half way through day 3. I'm staying up stairs coz I'm a nightmare for clearing, cleaning & find it hard to switch off.

I'm reading your issue with interest because as good as the physio & nurse have said I'm doing, I am aware that our body will bring us back down to the level it feels comfortable. Even tho we want to progress further we still have to obey it's will. You have probably overdone yesterday without realising it.

Be careful with yourself. ..Little steps will take you further overall and in a few months time you will look back at this post & laugh.

Best of luck & well done

      Hi Westie,

I'm sure you're right. I found myself cleaning the sink in the bathroom on my first morning home! Madness! Thanks for your thoughts.
