Difficult to pee during night...daytime when I am awake fully is ok.

I have started a couple of threads on here about my experiences after turps & on the whole it feels like I am on the mend and grateful for it....it hasnt all been plain sailing..

At the moment I am peeing much better during the day and have stopped using a catheter (isc) I may just check occasionally..The situation I find frustrating is that during the night I cannot void properly and also I am being disturbed every two hours or so by feeling an urge..

It feels like my system is asleep and cannot operate properly....yet during the day I am glad to say that it all feels mostly ok, and seems to be working. I now have a decent stream and voiding mostly well.

Does anyone have the same experiences in regards to night times...either after turp or not....does our physiology struggle a tad during the night anyway.? I am 64 years of age.

    Hi there

Have seen this explanation on this forum in the past and there seemed to be some agreement as to its veracity.

One poster figured out or read somewhere, that during the day a higher proportion of the fluid in our body accumulates in the lower half, principally our legs, due to gravity.

When we lie in bed horizontally, a lot of that fluid is redistributed and ends up being processed by the kidneys and ultimately filling the bladder. This leads to an imbalance in our peeing frequency between day and night.

One suggested solution was the wearing of compression stockings during the day to limit the fluid build up in the legs. The person who posted that suggestion reckoned that his nocturia was reduced from 5 or 6 voidings to 1 or 2 at the most.

Not sure if there is any real science behind this observation but it would be relatively cheap to try it out

You don't need compression stockings to reduce fluid buildup and swelling in the legs. All it takes is one small diuretic pill a day which also increases urination 24 hours but you should also drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

Prior to my HoLAP surgery some 8 weeks ago, I had the same problem. It wasn't too severe but I had a more restricted stream at night. I was prescribed alfuzosin, one pill at bedtime, and it readily solved the problem, with no noticeable side effects. Good luck to you.

I am 6 months post-TURP. Pre-TURP I was getting up 2-3 times a night and my voiding was often very slow. Now I am getting up 1-2 times a night and my voiding in generally fine. I never have a super slow stream like I had before. It does seem like my stream may not be as strong as it is during the day but I'm never at the toilet 3-5 minutes like I occasionally was before.

For me, the best thing about the post-TURP experience is that when I feel the urge to pee, I can hold it if I'm not near a bathroom. Pre-TURP, I could literally feel the anxiety rising if the urge struck and a bathroom wasn't readily available because my median lobe would act like a ball-valve and slow my stream to a trickle.

Great news & thanks for your reply. A month ago, I was in a different place physically and psychologically...today I feel ten times better. I too can hold and when I go it is strong and positive...I am thinking I just need to have patience (not a strong point with me) & night times may become better also...A month ago I was still cathing...today it is a completely different picture...
