Difficulty obtaining acamprosate.

My daughter has had a so far successful home detox privately arranged and afterwards used acamprosate which had previously been prescribed for an unsuccesful detox. She has now run out of acamprosate and our GP will not prescribe without going through the specialist service. The specialist service will not prescribe until her appointment with them at the end of May. I feel it is helping her and she needs all the help she can get, I am shocked by the lack of willingness of the services. This only leaves the possibility of buying on-line (of course the professionals say don't do that). Has anyone had experience of this?

Or any other private doctor close by you will likely be able to see her prior to the May appointment?
Some do buy their meds online but there will be at least a 2 week wait for delivery and this forum is unlikely to allow responses about ordering online as it is against the regulations they have to follow with regards to a UK prescription-only medication.

I had to do it.
I don't think there are any UK online pharmacies that do it, where you pay for an online prescription to get it, like you can with some prescription medications.
You could try what Joanna has suggested, either the private doctor you have previously used or another private doctor, to get a private prescription.
The only other option is abroad, which in my experience is seven to ten days and of course is more expensive.
I know this is immensely frustrating, because I was in the same sort of position and once you break the continuity of taking acamprosate, you are in danger of relapsing.
As Joanna has said, we're not allowed to discuss it on the forum, but if you look to go down the latter route, then feel free to PM me - that's the envelope icon under my avatar.

Hi lliz,
Yes this happened to me a while ago. I was told in no uncertain terms by a snotty doctor at my GP practice that they were not a drug and alcohol recovery service. I'm sure if I had gone with another illness, such as a mental health problem I wouldn't have been treated in the same manner.
