Difficulty putting on shoe after big toe fusion.

I am 12 weeks post surgery after big toe fusion. My surgeon has said I can discontinue wearing the surgical shoe and begin wearing normal footwear.

Yesterday I tried on 3 different types of shoes (2 different sneakers and Toms). I could not get them on my foot! My toe was too rigid, where I could not get my foot far enough in to also accommodate my heal. I was finally able to get a pair of Keen sneakers on, but it was so painful since my big toe is straight and the front of the shoe raises up (like most shoes).

Have others experienced this? If yes, does this get better? Any suggestions for shoes to try? I'm feeling defeated and scared at the moment and would appreciate any help.
