Difficulty swallowing

Has anyone else experienced difficulty swallowing with anxiety? Like you literally can't push whatever you are eating down your throat for a few seconds? My throat sort of feels numb and unresponsive

Yep I get that too! So horrible, I have hardy eaten anything today I can manage drinks but hard food I really can't swallow. I manage a few bites by having a drink with it. Yogurts, grapes and strawberries are juicy so maybe try little things like that.

I'll get the feeling like there's a lump in my throat, which is called Globus Sensation. I can swallow, but sometimes it feels like something is stuck.

Yep, it happens periodically. If I wait a little while, I can ususlly finish eating.

Thanks so much, it does reassure me! Anxiety is such a horrible illness, it's unbelievable the amount of symptoms it can cause and how real they can feel.

You are absolutely right about that, Wez.

Thanks for the replies, I'm glad others get this too. I was worried it was a symptom of throat cancer, ms , stroke or brain aneurysm or something being the hypochondriac I am. It's a bit annoying because I was having a really good day as well, like I was practically normal, then this came along ??

My mom had throat cancer, and even before we knew what it was, the symptoms were much different than what you have. Anxiety can mimic so many things, which in turn only makes us more anxious. It's the ultimate trickster.

Wez, I have experienced the swallowing but I do have a lack of appetite. Food to me seems unpaletable.

?My gag reflexes are sensitive too. Can't seem to brush my teeth without gagging or throwing up.

?It's the anxiety. Does this happen even with liquids? Are you taking any anxiety medications?

I know my post probably hasn't helped you but know that with anxiety there are definitely physical systems.

I have been using breathing techniques that have been helpful.

?Keep posting and maybe expressing your concerns will help ease your mind.

?I'm sending you positive vibes and I wishing you well. Take care. We are all heer to support you. Take care.

I've only been unable to swallow a few times, once about 2 weeks ago, and twice today. Once with cake, once with a milkshake and once with saliva. But randomly sonetimes throat throat feels really numb like its been injected with anastetic, usually when I'm thinking about it, which is all the time because I'm so worried about it! I feels so hard to believe it's just anxiety! Thanks!

I haven't heard of anyone that has this all the time. It seems to be periodic...and not often.

I'm just really glad that anxiety can cause this makes me less scared it's something serious
