digestive symptoms from fibroids

Hi,

Both my GP and an ob/gyn insisted that my digestive distress is not coming from fibroids--I have five big ones, which are not painful in themselves.  These doctors consider me "asymptomatic" even though I have to pee constantly, and I'm huge.

The digestion question is complicated:

I have a history of IBS--started way before I had fibroids--but it was under control for many years, no attacks.  I knew what my triggers were, and mainly stayed out of trouble.  In the past few years my IBS has gotten much worse, and I'm bloated and have cramps and not great bowel movments (incomplete evacuation) about half of the time.  I was convinced that fibroids have worsened my IBS through pressure on the bowels.  Both doctors deny this.  Recently I read an article by DoctorOz saying that fibroids DO create digestive problems from the pressure.  One of the tell tale signs is thin stools, which I definitely have.

So I would be very interested in hearing from other women with fibroids, as to whether they're having digestive symptoms they think are related to their fibroids.  The only "Official" digestive symptom of fibroids I keep coming across is constipation--which is not my case.  But I don't see how five large fibroids cannot have an effect on your bowels, which they are pressing against.

Even though I have two women doctors, I have been appalled at how they have not taken any of my symptoms seriously.  "Watchful waiting" while the fibroids gorw and grow.  I'm 55 and not menopausal and not wanting a hysterectomy but wanting to halt the growth and ideally shrink them.  The doctors are not helping because they claim I'm "asymptomatic" but actually I'm in digestive distress about half the time (often preventing me from sleeping) which I feel is (not caused by but) made worse by fibroids.

Would love to hear from anyone who has wondered about similar things.

Hi. I have the EXACT same symptoms. Lucky for me my dr. who is a woman, suggested that if I had trouble buttoning my pants and that if I'm constipated I might consider a hysterectomy. At first when she suggested a hysterectomy I was adamantly opposed to it. Now with the weight gain, due to the countless large fibroids, the insomnia, the indigestion and constipation due to my uterus pressuring parts of my digestive tract, I'm ready to go under the knife. I do have two naturopathic drs. that I see, so I will first talk with them about supplements that can dissolve them.

    I am also

Hi I have replied before, I'd be interested to see how everyone is getting on. I'm now 2 years post op and still have pains around the scar sight and lower back where most of my op was done.

Still experiencing digestive problems, pain around my whole lower area can be overwhelming sometimes. I also get what I can only explain as ridiculously loud rumbling after eating (no matter what the food).

Back on painkillers again with a hospital appointment in January after a 6 month wait, suspected endometriosis this time. Very overtired and moody (I have taken up exercise etc and have a good diet, vitamins). The doctor I saw said it was unlikely to be a fibroid, but it could me (made me nervous as no definate answer).

I'd like to know how everyone else is getting on. I initally felt better, but do worry as sometimes the pain I have leaves me wretching. The zoladex/op no idea which has left me with a terrible short term memory (others notice it). Not showing any signs of improvement at all, perhaps it's hormonal? Anyone else experiencing any of this? I'd love to know how people are getting on.

Sorry I forgot to agree, fibroids for me had a huge impact on my bowels and digestive system even now. How can they not?

      Hi,

Sorry I stopped responding here, as a result of seeing a 2nd ob/gyn who also said the fibroids had nothing to do with my digestive problems, and could offer no treatment except TAH--which I totally don't want.

I am willing to beleive to beleive the fibroids are not the cause of my digestive symptoms--because I have a history of IBS that predates the fibroids.

But I do beleive they have an impact on digestion.  I have one, outside the uterous, which is easy feel as a big lump just below and to the left of my navel.  I'm convinced this creates congestion in my tract.  But there are studies on this so the docs won't beleive it.

I have very little faith in doctors at this point,

But my attention is now on controlling IBS--and other more seirous issues--so I'm no longer thinking much about fibroids.  Have to live with them, in my case.

    Hi

I had no idea about my fibroid causing my constipation as well as infertility, until I had myomectomy to remove. Day after surgery my health went through the roof. I'd never been so well. I had open stomach surgery and felt better than I did before surgery.

Turned out my fibroid was atypical myoma (not cancer but not normal fibroid). I did 6 egg collections worth of IVF.

Still no children but I have 2 x 1cm fibroids diagnosed by internal ultrasound on 12 Dec and see Oncology 2 Feb to confirm when I can have my hysterectomy so never get another fibroid.

Despite not getting the Kids we wanted my health comes first so I'm having a hysterectomy. Get the risk of fibroids gone forever and let me feel well again.

Adoption is out as we were turned down due to lack of family support and we're approved foster parents with no children placed.

Hope this encourages you to get the fibroids gone. Even after a myomectomy you can get pregnant. Your health must come first to you or you'll never be able to get tge doctors to take it seriously enough to do something.

    Good luck

    Angie

I''ve have had the same reaction from every GYN. They blame everything on my IBS. I am miserable, and I know it's gynocological, but I can't get help. I wish I would have gotten a hysterectomy years ago. I am 53 and believe that perimenopause is also a culprit of my digestive issues and my GYN says that it is not related. I also have lesions, cysts and a small fibroid.

Go private if you can afford to if in Australia go to medicare. If you ask around if anyone knows someone good at hysterectomys and ring up and see if you pay for consults whether he can operate public may make more affordable. I'm only 41 and having hyster in April

I suffer from large fibroids and if I am constipated it causes me a lot of pain and pressure against my fibroids.  I've suffered from IBS since I was a teenager so I am usually in a state of constipation or diarrhea.  What I have very recently discovered is that I have a problem with wheat.  If I stay away from wheat and eat a high fiber diet my IBS symptoms are virtually eliminated.  I can't say for sure if it's a gluten problem or something else, however if I do eat pasta and it's gluten free, I can tolerate it quite well, if it's not gluten free it's a gamble if I will be in pain for the next few days.  It's been a huge adjustment because I love pasta, but it's worth it to feel better.

I have been on two rounds of Fibristal.  I've done really well while on the medication, but when I stop it my symptoms come back like I've ran into a wall.  However I have found something that makes me feel better than being on Fibristal. So I thought I would share incase this can help others.  I've discovered that if I can eat 3-4 apples a day the pain and complications that I get from my fibroids interfering with my bowel nearly disappear.  I can actually tell that either my fibroids are shrinking, or their is less inflammation, or my bowels are just performing better. How can I tell this?  It's odd, but I can tell by how well I can pass gas.  The fibroids were putting pressure on my bowels causing me to have a lot of gas pain, because I could not pass gas easily.  I did notice that when I went on my first round of Fibristal by the end of the first round I was passing gas with ease.  When I went off Fibristal the gas pains came back.  After my second round of Fibristal, my diet had significantly changed due to realizing that I have a sulfite sensitivity, which has now extremely limited my diet, which may help my symptoms as well, but what I do know for sure there is a direct relation to me eating several apples a day and my fibroid symptoms greatly subsiding.  I actually feel better than what I felt like on Fibristal, plus I don't have side effects of the medication, just the added benefits of all the fiber that I am passing through my bowels.

I try to eat 4 apples a day.  It's not always easy and it's a good thing I like apples.  Some days I forget and don't eat any, but I can tell that I start to not feel as well and then I will get back to eating the apples.  I don't know if it matters what kind of apples, but I've been strictly eating Gala apples because those are the ones that I like the best.  I told my male co-worker "I like them the best because they stay hard longer."  I should have said "crunchy longer".  You can imagine his response.

Have you tried a detox diet. Eliminates all toxins like wheat and then bring them in 1 at a time. Helps work out which foods to avoid. Worked great until I had my hyster and now have whatever I like.

I recently had a UFE (uterine fibroid embolizaton) procedure. About one year prior, I noticed I had thin stools. I noticed because I'd never had bowel issues and eliminated regularly. As the fibroids grew, I was still pretty regular (frequency), but my stools were thin and sometimes elimination was incomplete. I noticed a big improvement after the UFE. My stools were no longer thin and elimination was much more complete. The larger amount was quite noticeable which was probably why I was so bloated.

This was an old post, but hopefully this reply will help someone in the future.

I found that a detox followed by reintroducing foods one at a time helped me realise what foods helped and made me worse.

The detox was lots of lemon juice. When I tried eggs on toast my stomach let me know not to have that again and I thought it was the eggs but it turned out to be bread.

I found white bread in particular was bad. I went wheat free and it helped so much so I can now have white bread in small amounts. I would never suggest gluten free as gluten should only be avoided under medical supervision, but going onto rye bread really helped.

I like the detox minus the medicines because it clears your system naturally and allows individual reintroduction of foods to help find what is the problem items as everyone is different.

I am having my Hyster 12 April so hopefully no more issues after that.

    Hi

I got diagnosed with fibroids in 2016 January

I started with bleeding in between periods .

At the same time within a week or so I started with awful indigestion and consistent belching!

    A

Had tests ( camera in stomach etc all clear ! )

However it never went away fully !

I have since been diagnosed with gall stones !

I am convinced it is all linked and I think it is hormonally !

I am now waiting for gall bladder to be removed and seeing consultant next month about hysterectomy!

Hope you get sorted soon x

My hyster was the best thing. Hopefully you have the same experience. Just make sure you decide which type of Hyster so you don't regret it later. I chose Subtotal large incision, due to new fibroids and previous ones being Atypical (not normal but not cancer) and I wanted my cervix left so it wouldn't affect the length of my vagina.
