Dipstick hematuria but urine test came back normal

Posted , 4 users are following.

I am a 17 year old female.

For about four months now I have been experiencing problems with fully emptying my bladder and had trouble with leakage, even wetting myself completely once.

I went to my GP who tested my urine with a dipstick and found traces of blood. My GP also sent off a urine sample to the lab but this has come back negative for blood which confused me.

I have been referred to a urologist and have been booked for a kidney and bladder ultrasound in a couple of weeks.

Any ideas? Thank you smile

I'm 68 and have had diabetes for 19 years.  You may think this is nothing to do with your problem but bear with me.  Being diabetic I have to do many urine sampes and from the time I was diagnosed my samples more often than not came back with a trace of blood in them.  I have had many tests for urine infections and there was no explanation for the traces of blood.   At the end of last year I went to the toilet and it looked as if I had poured a jar of beetroot into the toilet there was that much blood.  This really frightened me and I made an appointment to see the doctor and shortly after was sent for an ultrasound and later a CT scan and a cystoscopy (camera in the bladder).  None, by the way, didn't hurt, the cystoscopy was a bit embarrassing and full badder for the scans was uncomfortabe, but at my age I'm used to those sort of things.   The results came back "normal" with no reason for the traces of blood but it was suggested that a small blood vessel had burst, hence the large amount of blood.  Being diabetic I may have early signs of kidney failure but have not been told this or been given any treatment for it.

As the hospital tested your urine and it came back negative then maybe the doctor just didn't read the dipstick properly.   If he just dipped the stick in and compared the colour on the pad with the colours on the stick tub then it's quite possible that it was near the positive colour so he sent it off just to make sure.  The hospital results are the best ones to believe so, as they said it was negative, that is good. It may be that you have a urine infection which could account for the not emptying properly or might be because you are in a bit of a rush when you go and don't allow enough time to completely empty your bladder. Have you tried standing up and waiting a couple of minutes and then trying again as you may be able to get rid of the rest the second time.  I often do this after I realised that I'd go and then five minutes later wanted to go again.

At least you are going to have some tests done and hopefully they will come back that there is nothing wrong.  If you have a urine infection it can easily be sorted out with a course of antibiotics.   I agree with jayneeay, drink plenty of fluids and you're sure to have to do this before the ultrasound as they can see better if the bladder is full.  When I had this done I was afraid I would lose control but it wasn't too bad but oh the relief after!!!   Good luck.

Sorry, my editing before posting left the sentence "None, by the way, didn't hurt" when it should have said None, by the way, hurt - silly me!

    Hi Summer

yes thats good info from Spindles ..😃

just maybe be a missed infection.. also with a UTI ( urinary tract infection ) or Cystitis you may feel a strong urge for a wee and get there and there is no real urgency. and you may feel discomfort  if you press just above your pubic bone lower tummy..

also pain while having a wee and just after stopping ... and a general achey feeling in the pelvic region... try not to lean forward while having a wee, sit up straight somthe bladder empties or you restrict the flow,

Spindles mentions the Cystoscopy which i have also had years ago and it isnt painful at all like Spindles said, so dont worry .. ( dont think your having that though you say)

i suffer with a sensitive bladder so i know how annoying this all is ..

you will soon feel better when you get sorted, shame you have to wait so long, if the blood gets more, dont wait still see your doctor ..

    plenty of water

    take care
