Saw the consultant and had x Ray six months on, he was pleased with knee and said it would take another six months for it to be completely normal.  He actually admitted that it is a very painful operation.  It as interesting to see the X-ray of the news knee.   I have been discharged now from follow up.   I hope this gives some encouragement to all the early stage sufferers.

    You would imagine that the National Health Service would mean just that, national but it shows how each hospital/locaton differs; my follow-ups are: first at 12 weeks and then 1 year and we are not offered any physio as standard, you can only be referred if you have problems!

      I had six week follow up and then six months.   I still have physio in a class once a week.   Gym work mostly.   When I came out of hospital I had no aids given to me, had to provid my own toilet seat, bands and bought a peddle cycle.   So yes it does vary from Trust to Trust.

      I was literally sent home with crutches and a sheet of six exercises, I too had to provide all other aids. Hopefully I will be having two weeks of extensive physio soon to help improve my bend as at 9 weeks I am currently sitting with a bend of 69, mind you I have had to push for the help.

      hi carol im the same 12 weeks though I brought mine fwd to 10 then 1 year no physio no aids no nothing!!!!! where do you live????

      Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland. I requested an appointment at 8 weeks as I was concerned about the bend.

      I live in Australia & I saw my surgeon at 6 weeks, normally again at 3 mths & then again at 6 mths. Because I had both done I spent 9 days in Rehab which was wonderful, hour of physio morning & afternoon. It really got me moving quickly, but now at 8 wks today, I am finding it difficult to fit in enough rest & exercises plus all the household bits. I live alone so have to shop, clean, cook etc. glad I found this forum to keep my spirits up. If I have a big day, the next day has to be resting & exercising at home due to aching legs.

      Havng both done, that would be difficult. The rehab sounds great but unfortunately my surgeon doesn't see any benefit in having physio after the op! In my head surely it has got to make sense, I am 56 and struggling, I can't imagine what it would be like to be 20 years older and having to do this alone.

      My surgen said the same. He said physiotherapy often does more harm than good. don't really agree with him, provided you have a qualified physio, but he was very much against it!  I had about four sessions at home with a private physio, but it was so expensive I had to give it up . . . since then tried to do more or less what she did at home, but there is no doubt it's hard to cause yourself as much grief as they do, and so I've taken so far over four months to get to 120 . . . I'm 70, so still 'relatively' young!

    Here in Tenerife  I had a two week then six week consultation, and that was that. . . but that was with a private surgeon.Obviously he's not looking for easy money as he signed me off at six weeks!   iI I had had it done on the national health service, i would have been given physiotherapy, but as the hospital where I had ghe operation  was eighty miles away I didn't bother with that!  I couldn't imagine travelling that far for physiotherapy . . . Just getting home was traumatic enough!

    Well done Susan!  Isn't that a good feeling!  You realize you are going to still have some off days but it goes with the territory.   Keep in touch.

      Will do.  I do have off days but they are getting fewer.  It was nice that I actually met a surgeon who admitted how painful it is!  I told him I would rather give birth ten times over than have this done again!  He really laughed.   I nearly decked him.....lol

      I'm going to skip the giving birth thing thanks.  Although I could make a lot of $$ from the tabloids as I am (let me check) yes.... a guy.

    Great that sounds about right to me. I had TKR 3 years ago.

    Consultant gave me a 6 week , and 1 year follow up.

    He siad they usually discharge after 1 year but my previous knee was very bad and they wanted to keep an eye on me, so gave me 2 year appointment which was last year I was discharged at this appointment.

      I think he thought he was going to see me back for the other knee....not so likely!!   I am going to lose loads of weight instead!   Not going through that pain again if I can help it!
