Discomfort at back of knee after hip replacement.

Posted , 7 users are following.

I had my hip replacement done nearly 6 weeks ago and am doing quite well but have a feeling of discomfort at the back of the knee. I had thought it was because my knee was quite swollen but it doesn't look so swollen now but I cant bend it too much and it feels like a bit of a lump . Its uncomfortable when I'm lying in bed. Is this normal? I've been elevating and icing 3 times a day and doing the exercises.

Hi Maureen I am 9 weeks post LTHR and have also doing well but have had left knee discomfort and pain on walking which I sort of thought maybe general healing at first .The surgeon said at 6 week follow up that the knee goes under a lot of pressure during surgery , he did add 'not enough to damage it though 'So i am not really sure whether this is usual or not.It has started to wake me at night so i may have to see GP if it persists .Have you been followed up yet? If not go armed with questions 😊

Yours sounds similar to mine and you are doing the right thing by icing it etc Be interesting to hear other comments which I am sure we will

Yes I believe the knee comes under a lot of pressure during the op. mine is still bruised and sore to touch at the side. Am having my 6 week check up in 2 days so hopefully find out what it is then.

If yours is getting worse I would see the doctor about it.

Thanks - hope its something like that and nothing more serious. Not really painful just uncomfortable , although enough to stop me sleeping sometimes.

I certainly had feelings of discomfort behind my knee first time round. I cant recall it lasting that long Have you been for your follow up appointment yet? Maybe ask then? It could be the swelling further up is still irritating the nerves

im 12 weeks LHR and my knee is sore and i feel i cant fully straighten my knee. i am doing exercises from the physio to help improve it, i have not experienced a lump, it just feels tight. i cant walk up stairs yet, i csn only go up one leg at a time.

Don't worry Ann, everyone progresses at their own pace . I dont think we realise just how much of the strain our knees have taken before the op. With my first it was a lot longer than that before i could go up and down stairs normally and even then sometimes it was still painful .

      Keep up the good work!
