Discomfort & pain only at night, no pain during day?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi there, I have been diagnosed with blepharitis. My eyelids are always red but the pain & ache only comes after I sit down at night around 8 ish. My eyes start to ache, when I sleep if I wake during night I feel like I can’t open my eyes & they really hurt. In the morning there is usually discharge in them. Funny thing is once I am up they are not painful throughout the day? Do you think this is blepharitis? Optician says I have it?

Thanks heaps

I’d se an opthalmologist as well. They dilate your eyes and take a really derp look to cpnfirm blepharitis

In the meantime, get some good quality tea tree oil and some naby shampoo. After washing your face in the morning with aild facial cleanser, paying special attention to gently go across your eyelids several tomes to remove the nights buildup of crusts and discharge, follow up with a couple drops of the oil in a dab of the shampoo and run gently across tightly closed eyes, wIt a full minute before rinsing thoroughly and dab dry with clean towel ir better still soft paper towel. Do mot dab each eye with the same part of tge towel. You’ll feel a copl residue from using thos preparation, a good sign that it has neitralized the bacteria. Do this again in the afternoon and setime before you sit dow at 8 o’clock. During the day DO NOT TOUCH YOUR EYES.  If they feel dry or the least bit gritty you can flush them, eyes closed with warm water for a minute each eye. Again dabbing dry with sterile towel or paper towel. Pain like you describe is usual durimg a really acute flare up which it does not sound like you’ve had which has a host of additional symptoms which you do not mention.

In any case the cleansing routine i mention here will not hurt your eyes to-try and will probably stave off a full blown episode  if this is indeed bleph.

Also throw out your eye makeup. Its surely contaminated. And stop wearing eyeakeup intil you have a definitive diagnosis.

    Good luck.

Thank you I was given a wash from optometrist which contains tea tree & coconut oil in a mousse you was shut eyelids with but it didn’t help & I felt my eyes were sorer. Thanks for your advice is a ophthalmologist different to a optometrist as he had a really good look & said he could see blocked oil ducts?

It so affects my sleep so will give all your advice a go.

      Thanks again 😊

There are products out there that have been developed to deal with bleph symptoms based on ingredients proven to be of help. BUT they are not pure, i.e. moussed, soaked into pads (Cliradex, which is very ecoensive), etc.

get an eye mask tgat you put into the microwave for 20 seconds and apply to your closed eyes with a tissue in between to keep it sterile for future use. This will inplug those stopped up glands. You can actually feel it happening. Its also very soothing. I bought the mousse initially and its mot a bad preparation to take on a trip if you have the symptoms in hand.

The key is not to stop washing a.m. and p.m. no matter how yoyr eyes are feeling. I have found tgat gatting complacent spells trouble as you are alliwing the bacteria to proliferate and build to a flare- up. Get the WET ONES too. Cut into 8 pieces and have tgem handy for when you feel the slightest itch or burn.. these are signals that bacteria is accumulating slowly but surely. Also start taking an OMEGA3 supplement daily.

I've had blepharitis for 12 years and I seen about 9 doctors which none of them provided me relief until I got on this website and found out about wet ones... I'll tell you it's a miracle my eyes cleared up and if stay cleared up since using them. My biggest complaint when I had the blepharitis was the pain and couldn't open my eyes and very light sensitive like I said the Wet Ones are a miracle.

      Dear Janine,

The Wet Ones, antibacterial hand wipes, I used were in a box. They come from the US and they have Benzethonium Chloride in them. The UK ones use Benzalkonium Chloride and people have said they are harsher.

The last ingredient is Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. The Wet Ones in the yellow box have the same ingredients. There are different ingredients in some of the red boxes now so check on side of the box.

The box has 24 individual hand wipes.

I wore makeup and killed it at the same time. If you need that info let me know.

      Hope this helps,

I have just been diagnosed with blepharitis too. I’ve bought a eye mask that I heat up in the microwave and then use baby shampoo in cold boiled water to cleanse lashes. It doesn’t seem to be doing anything!!  Should I wash my face pre or post the eye mask. Also interested in buying the wet wipes. Which brand are they?  Thank you

    Dear janine,

I used Wet Ones in a red box that are called Pocket Size Singles. The last ingredient listed is Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice. The yellow box ones can be used too. I killed the Blepharitis over 5 years a go and it has not come back. I do use throw away mascara wands still to this day. I use 1 on both eyes but I never put it back into the mascara.

If you are in the U K you will have to order these wipes online. Th U K wipes use Benzalkonium Chloride. People have used these but most say they are harsh.

    Hope this helps,

No I'm A Yank.. I have both benzethonium and benzalkonium. Which is harsher but still work on the bacteria that causes blepharitis

      Dear Lardy,

Both are Quaternary ammonium salts but BAC (Benzalkonium Chloride) is more toxic when I looked up the comparison of the two. People have posted that it was harsh too. I used the Benzethonium Chloride Wet Ones. These do take 10 minutes to work on a surface. I did not wash it off but eyes can be washed off after 10 min.

If you have sensitive skin and are allergic to detergents or fabric softeners you may not be able to use these. They have aloe and lanolin in them too. Just under 20% of people have problems with this.

      Hope this helps,
